Managing yourself and preparation for your second career

Peter F. Drucker, born in 1918, is probably the 20st Century's greatest management thinker. He was Professor at New York University and currently teaches at the Graduate Management School of Claremont University, California. Drucker is the authors of numerous books and award-winning articles. This article was published in the March-April 1999 issue of the Harvard Business Review.
Today, knowledge workers outlive organisations and are mobile. The need to manage oneself is therefore creating a revolution in human affairs. Drucker gives advise on the management of ourselves. We need to ask ourselves the following questions: What are my strengths?; How do I perform?; What are my values? The authors provides advise on how to answer these questions> Once these questions are answered we need to find out where we belong and what we should contribute. According to Drucker, "we will have to place ourselves where we can make the greatest contribution." But because we need to work with others we also need to take responsibility for our relationships. This requires us to accept other people as much as individuals as ourselves and take responsibility for communication. The author also identifies that most knowledge workers are not "finished" after 40 years on the job, "they are merely bored". He identifies three ways to develop a second career: (1) start one; (2) develop a parallel career; or (3) be a social entrepreneur. And managing the second half of your life requires you to begin with it before you enter it.
Great article by the Master of Management on how we can manage ourselves. He recognizes the latest trend whereby knowledge workers are outliving organizations which result in them having/creating second careers. He provides advise on where to locate yourself based on your strengths, performance, and values. This article is an exerpt from his 1999-book 'Management Challenges for the 21st Century'. As usual Drucker uses his famous simple US-English writing style. Highly recommended, just like all his articles.

A good article, a bad book

If you're like me, you were recommended this book by Tai Lopez. If that's the case, why are you reading reviews? (I.e., don't listen to just anyone.)

This "book" isn't actually a book. It's a reprinting of an article published in Harvard Business Review January 2005, which I realized I had laying around the house! I read that first, then when I opened this book was rather shocked to realize it was an exact reprint stretched from 10 magazine pages to 50 in 24+ pt font size.

Frankly, this book isn't a book by the standards you probably have. As other reviewers have lamented, Drucker mentions something important then just moves on, giving no steps on how to go about figuring it out. What you get is a barebones explication of managing oneself, and it has a few good insights. The semantic point aside---that it shouldn't be called a book---you will probably learn a few pointers about managing oneself. But you will be greatly disappointed if you expect there to be much more than an outline of what you should do in general.

Here's what it covers:
What are my strengths?
How do I perform?
What are my values?
Where do I belong?
What should I contribute?
Responsibility for relationships
The second half of your life

You'll notice that they are mostly questions. The article really seems to just be a (guided) impetus to think about certain important things in your life. The shortness of the book is really a reflection that YOU have to do the work of figuring out the answers.

Great article on self life management

This is not a book in the true sense, but an article printed in form of a small book. The size should not diminish in any way the quality of the writing. This is a small gem that one has a look at in a time of reflection. If you read it you will learn something from it because it has that ability to stir your mind and discover a fresh view.

In essence the principles of self management are: know your own strength, know how you perform (method of learning and delivery) and personal values. You also have to know where you belong. This seems simple but it is difficult to realise that knowledge in practice.

One other aspect discussed in this book is the question of personal contribution that you bring to the organisation, a favourite topic for Peter Drucker. Following from that, it is interesting to consider one's responsibility for managing the relationship with others.

Finally, I found valuable the consideration for a career in the second life half. Now that I read that it makes sense to me. The discourse is short, sharp and practical. I think it is very useful for people who consider a second career in their life as a planned venture not as a move to better employment opportunities

Overall, great article, but I give it four stars because it is not a book. It should be made clear in the introduction somewhere that it is just that.

Great Theoretical Introduction

I was assigned this book for my Methods and Theories of Art History course, and I have to say that it was of great help at the time. What makes me recommend it so fervently is that it greatly complements with the reading of classic art historical texts, in the sense that it provides a much better theoretical background. If you're reading semiological art history, or you're trying to locate the work of Wolfflin or Panofsky within a chronological and ideological frame, I would suggest you read this as a helpful background tool.

There was a general consensus at the end of the course that D'Alleva's book should be an almost mandatory reading for art history majors, or even for those people whose interest is the history of art and artworks.

The loss of the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986 is usually ascribed to NASA's decision to accept a safety risk to meet a launch schedule. Vaughan, a professor of sociology at Boston College, argues instead that the disaster's roots are to be found in the nature of institutional life. Organizations develop cultural beliefs that shape action and outcome, she notes. NASA's institutional history and group dynamics reflected a perception of competition for scarce resources, which fostered a structure that accepted risk-taking and corner-cutting as norms that shaped decision-making. Reliability/Maintenance/Refinery Engineering Application

I started reading this book to improve my Root Cause Failure Analysis skills after hearing that it covers, in fine detail, a failure that cost the lives of 7 astronauts and destroyed a multi-billion dollar asset. We are first presented with the popular media viewpoint that describes how performance-driven NASA administrators aggressively pursued production, political, and economic goals at the expense of personal safety. How a mechanical flaw formally designated as a potentially catastrophic anomaly by NASA and Thiokol engineers became a normal flight risk on the basis of previous good launches. How a last minute plea from subject matter experts to halt the countdown on an uncommonly cold day in January 1986 was ignored by engineering managers on the decision chain so the launch schedule would not be compromised.
I remember an early feeling of relief in knowing that while similar performance, production, and scheduling pressures exist in my career, the attitudes that were mostly at fault for the Challenger incident are absent from my refinery and violate all 10 of my parent company's business principles starting with #1 (conduct all business lawfully and with integrity).
The author then proceeds to shatter every element of this popular emotional impression by presenting a credible account of the failure based on public record. This is an important point because unlike with Enron's collapse, there is no shredding of pertinent documents behind the Challenger incident. And it is this matter of public record that can benefit anyone having reliability or production engineering responsibilities within a refinery. Here we find evidence that NASA's best friend - a reliable system built to assure the utmost safety in engineering - was to blame for the tragedy. A system that encourages the challenging of engineering data to validate its meaning. A system that prioritizes safety above any other initiative. A system that requires operation within specified safety limits in order to function. A system that requires vendor/customer interaction. A system with multiple departments, requiring effective communication between each.
I soon realized that the book that I was reading was not a book about a tragic point in American history, but a book about managing risks we routinely encounter in a refinery, using the Challenger incident as the case history to relate them to. Like so many case histories in industry, we benefit by understanding what went wrong and taking proactive measures to prevent against it from happening again.
If I owned this refinery and someone came to me saying, "Hey, I'd really like to work here" I would send him or her off with a copy of this book. If that person returned still interested, chances are he or she would get the job.

A Hard Read - Worth theEffort

A great book - many lessons for business in making decisions based on what you want to see and not what is really in front of you.
The actual cause of the disaster is clear in the first 20 of 500 pages - the booster O ring was safe at perhaps 60F while the booster had been only 8F some two hours before the launch, the ambient temperature was less important as the booster that failed was not in the direct sunlight.
The other 480 pages try to explain why rational people relied on "gut feel" when any non engineer could see that all the available evidence was that the seal would fail - this time or next time but eventually - and sooner rather than later.
Well researched and well converted into low level technical language for non engineers.
Worth reading when you want to be reassured that standing up for what you believe is right in large organisations is a worthy cause.
The only question not asked - would those who made the launch decision traded places with the crew.

Normalization Of Deviance

As a sociological explanation of disastrous decision making in high risk applications, this book is without peer, exceeding even Charles Perrow's work by a fair measure. Vaughan, a sociologist, obviously worked very hard at understanding the field joint technology that caused the "Challenger" accident, and even harder at understanding the extremely complex management and decision making processes at NASA and Morton Thiokol.

The book ultimately discards the "amoral calculation" school of thought (which she was preconditioned to believe at the outset of her research by media coverage of the event) and explains how an ever expanding definition of acceptable performance (despite prior joint issues) led to the "normalization of deviance" which allowed the faulty decision to launch to be made. The sociological and cultural analyses are especially enlightening and far surpass the technical material about the actual physical cause of the accident presented.

This is a masterful book, and is impeccably documented. The reference portion of the book in the back is especially useful, in that she reproduces several key original documents pertinent to the investigation which are difficult to obtain elsewhere. My only objection to the book is the extreme use of repetition, which I think needlessly lengthened the book in several areas, and obfuscating sociological terminology like "paradigm obduracy" which not only fails to illuminate the non-sociologists among us, but makes for somewhat tortured prose.

In praise of the book, however, it is a brilliant analysis of how decisions are made in safety-critical programs in large institutions. Chapter ten, "Lessons Learned," is particularly noteworthy in its analysis and recommendations. It's a shame that managerial turnover has ensured that few of the "Challenger" era managers were still at the agency during the "Columbia" accident era. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.

This book makes for very weighty and difficult reading. Having said that, I highly recommend it to technical professionals, particularly engineers and managers involved with high-risk technologies. Likewise, it is absolutely imperative reading for safety professionals, consultants, and analysts.

Trees in Urban Design, Second Edition, concentrates two new chapters on the more utilitarian issues of urban tree planting. The book also suggests a realistic method of budgeting for tree planting and maintenance. About the Author
About the Author Henry F. Arnold is an experienced landscape architect who began his career as a land use planner for the Delaware County Planning Commission, in Pennsylvania. He then practiced landscape architecture for nine years as an associate and then as a partner in the firm of Dan Kiley and Partners and has since been involved in his own practice in Princeton, New Jersey. In 1970 he served as a consultant to the Ministry of National Development in Singapore. During 1975 and 1976 he was a Visiting Assistant Professor of Urban Design at Pratt Institute. Mr. Arnold studied forestry and landscape architecture at Pennsylvania State University and received his degree in landscape architecture from the University of Pennsylvania.

Essential reading for landscape architects and designers

As a practicing urban designer, I reference this book on a weekly basis. It provides a clear and concise understanding of how trees perform in urban conditions, from conceptual use in spatial definition to planting details. Many of Arnold's ideas were revelations to me, even after five years of training in landscape architecture. Unfortunately, the volume is somewhat dated, especially in its notes on current cultivar disease resistance. Still, highly recommended.

Life Changing

I am a landscape designer and arboricultural consultant in the UK.
This book was a revelation to me back in the '80s and has greatly influenced the advice I give to clients and what I teach my students.
It is a 'must-read'for all those responsible for planting trees and designing outdoor spaces in urban areas.

Kincaid and the furious white

The author must be new to the game as I do not recognize him but I'm sure that he will be recognized in the future as the book is riveting. I would normally call it a "page turner" but since I've read it via Kindle, I must call it a "button pusher". The author seems to know much about life in Alaska a century ago, and aware of the various inconveniences of the time. However, the real reward in reading this book is the story with many twists and turns. A very good plot. I say this even though I'm quite reticent to read the average novel. My preference is history and the reader of this book gets his fill of historical items. Overall a five star rating.

Recommended Practical Guide

I've only read part way through, but I can attest that at least the first 10-chapters have been extremely useful to me. The techniques suggested, like "The Creativity 2-Step", have already born fruit.

If you have any trouble developing your ideas, finding the spine of your story, or feeling your brain is cluttered with too much material, I would highly recommend you consider this practical guide.

Be aware, the author has chosen to provide the book in a serialized version online on their website for free. I chose to buy the Kindle version to have access without internet, ease of reading and search.

Waste of money

Utter Rubbish. - this was my first review and I was pulled up rather harshly for not giving any reasons behind it ... so herewith my reasoning.
In the very first paragraph of the book Melanie states: "Simply follow the instructions and by the time you are finished, you will have written your book."
You will not have done any such thing. You will have pages and pages and pages of questions about your characters' ages and the setting for your book and (if you stuck with this methodology) pages and pages of answers to them.
Melanie Anne Phillips is one of the developers of Dramatica - screenwriting software that is pretty well known and quite highly regarded. It was for this reason that I actually bought this book. Dramatica gives very precise details on ways to develop a screen story, therefore I assumed that this book would be as good for novels.
Perhaps if you are a complete novice at writing you will appreciate the very long-winded, very detailed chapter giving Melanie's reasons for selecting one age over another to award to her characters - but I was hoping for a little more meat.
And I guess that sums up my problem with this book - it is very long to say very little. You are better off going to the Dramatica website and just reading the articles they have there.

A Valuable Resource For Those Interested in Eschatology

This is not really a book one reads linearly from beginning to end, though you could. It is more a reference guide to "last days madness" (to borrow the title of another of American Vision's books) as it has manifest itself throughout the centuries. The book is broken up into chapters each of which is devoted to a specific aspect of eschatology such as the millennium, the abomination of desolation, the anti-Christ, wars and rumors of wars, the "rapture", etc. Within each chapter are date headings under which we find some of the beliefs expressed at the time regarding the return of Christ. What becomes immediately obvious after reading several of these is that our present day does not have the market cornered on the belief that we are the last generation or in assigning prophetic significance to contemporary world events.

We find out for example that in A.D. 449 a deacon at Carthage named Quodvultdeus wrote in a book called Book on Promises and Predictions that "the barbarian invasions in his lifetime were signs of the End. He identified the Goths and the Moors as Gog and Maygog." Kind of a 3rd century The Late, Great Planet Earth !

Later we read that Sir Walter Raleigh in 1615 believed that Gog and Maygog were the Pope and Spain and that the Turks were the locusts in the Book of Revelation.

Examples of this kind go on and on for a variety of eschatological topics. The one thing they all have in common is that they were later proven wrong by the passage of time. Another interesting feature of the book is a series of some 20 charts outlining things such as candidates for the anti-Christ at various points in history or different views on the meaning of the mark of the beast. As with the narrative examples, the common thread is that all of these beliefs have been proven wrong.

Some examples in the book have been proven wrong before the very eyes of people still living today such as Chuck Smith's prediction that the "rapture" would occur in 1981.

Having been raised on dispensational premillennialism, I remember it coming as a surprise to me that others throughout history had made similar predictions to those being made by people like Hal Lindsey. As with many in this belief system, I felt that what men like Lindsey were teaching was unique to our time and was based on a literal interpretation of the Bible. A book like this which has essentially done all the research for you (the footnotes are extensive for those interested in tracking down original sources) is an valuable resource for debunking that thought and the newspaper exegesis going on today.

Well Researched and Entertaining

Francis Gumerlock, a classmate of mine, has done a great job of research here. He chronicles the false interpretations of end-time prophecy throughout church history. You will learn about some of the most bizarre scoundrels and heretics in church history as well as some orthodox folks who were simply reading the Bible in light of world events rather than the opposite. Reading this book is a good way to get a jolt of humility in this day and age when prophecy books about a future antichrist run rampant (The Left Behind series, for instance). This is definitely one to add to your library -- I can think of no book like it.
