The Colonel Who Would Not Repent: The Bangladesh War and Its Unquiet Legacy, by Salil Tripathi

A searing, kaleidoscopic portrait of Bangladesh from the 1947 Partition to the present

Bangladesh was once East Pakistan, the Muslim nation carved out of the Indian Subcontinent when it gained independence from Britain in 1947. As religion alone could not keep East Pakistan and West Pakistan together, Bengali-speaking East Pakistan fought for and achieved liberation in 1971. Coups and assassinations followed, and two decades later it completed its long, tumultuous transition to parliamentary government. Its history is complex and tragic—one of war, natural disaster, starvation, corruption, and political instability.

First published in India by the Aleph Book Company, Salil Tripathi’s lyrical, beautifully wrought tale of the difficult birth and conflict-ridden politics of this haunted land has received international critical acclaim, and his reporting has been honored with a Mumbai Press Club Red Ink Award for Excellence in Journalism. The Colonel Who Would Not Repent is an insightful study of a nation struggling to survive and define itself.

Review
“Superb and harrowing. . . . A fine and judicious account of the horrors of the Bangladesh war of independence.”—Philip Hensher, The Guardian (Philip Hensher)

“This is a compelling, haunting chronicle of the tragic recent history of Bangladesh. A heartbreaking tale of war, famine, insurgency, coups, and democratic politicking, Salil Tripathi’s powerful book is important reading for anyone trying to understand modern South Asia.” —Gary J. Bass, author of The Blood Telegram: India's Secret War in East Pakistan, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize (Gary Bass)

“Many nation-states of Asia and Africa were once celebrated for their bold act of self-determination. They are best understood today through their failure to break free of their bloody origins, and their always likely descent into anarchy. Salil Tripathi's book resourcefully and grippingly describes Bangladesh's tormented search for truth and justice, and its implications for the stability of one of world's largest Muslim countries.”—Pankaj Mishra, author of From the Ruins of Empire, and winner of the Windham-Campbell Prize for Non-Fiction (Pankaj Mishra)

“Salil Tripathi brings together the narrative skill of a novelist and the analytical tools of a political journalist to give us the story of a nation that is absorbing, haunting and illuminating.”—Kamila Shamsie, author of In the City by the Sea and A God in Every Stone (Kamila Shamsie)

“A sensitive and nuanced account of the story of Bangladesh based on eye witness narratives of key players as well as ordinary citizens that make the book a riveting reading. It puts together materials from various sources and presents the contestations, contradictions and dilemmas of Bangladeshi politics in a balanced yet highly readable style. The study will be of use both to a scholarly and a popular audience.”—Rounaq Jahan, Distinguished Fellow, Centre for Policy Dialogue, Dhaka, Bangladesh (Rounaq Jahan)

“Tripathi’s book revisits Bangladesh’s founding in comprehensive detail. Poignantly, its publication comes at a moment when the nation seems on the verge of its next existential crisis—one that includes now-frequent slayings that the author himself is speaking up against. . . . The book functions best to fill in history’s rough outline with vivid depictions of wartime conditions; stories of common courage; and rare, specific recognition of innocents who died. . . . The Colonel Who Would Not Repent serves as a primer to the current crisis.”—M. Sophia Newman, The Millions (M. Sophia Newman The Millions)

“[A] searing account . . . one of the finest contemporary histories of the period . . . a fine contribution to understanding the deeper causes of a war that killed hundreds of thousands. . . . Vivid accounts of events and places, and Tripathi’s moving interviews with survivors make for rewarding, if harrowing, reading.”—Nayan Chanda, Global Asia (Nayan Chanda Global Asia)

Tries to explain contemporary politics through a historical lens
By Nabil
This is the first book I read dealing with Shahabag movement. The author does a commendable job in presenting the situation neutrally. The story-telling nature of the book is executed well. Not only does this book include personal anecdotes of brave survivors, it highlights the nuances of the politics. Mr. Salil did a superb job in presenting the difficulties of setting up war-crimes trial 40 years later while also understanding the deep sentiment of victims seeking justice and closure. The only shortcoming would be devoting less pages to document the history under military rule. A must-read for a neutral reader of the history of Bangladesh.

Birth pangs and a midlife crisis:
By Vistasp Hodiwala
It's astonishing how personal histories of significant historical events can so eloquently blank out a significant chunk of narrative whilst disproportionately bloating up events that serve narrow national interest. As an Indian school kid growing up back in the 80's, the 1971 war was just a 15 day affair when Sam Maneckshaw and JFR Jacob emerged as heroes extraordinaire riding astride their army jeeps and battle tanks like knights in shining armour to 'rescue' Bangladesh.

And that was that.

But why on Allah's earth did the Bengali Muslim in a matter of just two and a half decades decide to go against his co-religionists when Islam was the cohesive glue that was supposed to hold it all together? What precipitated a defiant Mujibur Rehman to challenge the Pakistani establishment? What kind of brutality and atrocity did the local citizenry brave to get to a point where it became unbearable to live without the thought of independence? Why was the secular identity so dear to the average Bangladeshi brought up on a steady intellectual diet of Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam?

It took Salil Tripathi's scholarly and sensitive work The Colonel Who Would Not Repent to restore sense and balance to that skewed narrative. Not that anything about India's contribution was exaggerated then or need not be celebrated now, but the spectacular lack of awareness most of us in India have about the birth pangs of our neighbour to the east is a thing of humbling detail. This heartrending account about the birth of a nation also takes into account the events during India's partition and the advantages it frittered away due to crude political ambitions and tragic bickering in a mere 5 years since her birth.

Yes, Bangladesh still performs way better on key human index indicators than its two larger and more noisy neighbours to its West but its political framework is as brittle as it started out with and Salil's book explores this with tremendous depth and total empathy. So if you ever feel curious about this passionate neighbour of ours, this book is as good a place to begin as any.

An authoritative and very readable account of the war in Bangladesh
By Kevin
“The Colonel Who Would Not Repent” is the remarkable story of one of the twentieth century’s most cataclysmic conflicts, the 1971 war which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh.

Salil Tripathi describes the social, linguistic, political and cultural fault lines that separated the two parts of former Pakistan. When the government in Islamabad tried to eliminate political differences through a campaign of repression in early 1971, after Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s Awami League from the East had won an all-Pakistan election but had been prevented from taking power, Bengali resistance and, eventually, Indian intervention led to the defeat of West Pakistan and the emergence of Bangladesh as an independent state.

During nine months of conflict an estimated 10 million refugees fled to India. As Tripathi points out, this was “the single-largest and most rapid instance of forced displacement in recent history.”

The war saw a systematic attempt to liquidate the intellectual and cultural elite of the new state at birth. It also witnessed a program of rape carried out by Pakistani forces. In a particularly moving section of the book, Tripathi examines the military campaign of sexual violence, recording with empathy the stark and painful testimony of survivors.

“I decided to tell the story of each woman I met, because each experience taught me something new,” he writes. “It is easy to talk of ‘a quarter million rapes’ and think that each violent encounter was the same. It never is.”

Independent Bangladesh fared badly as a result of misrule and, in 1974, famine. In August 1975 junior officers staged a coup. Tripathi delivers a masterly forensic account of the assassination of Mujib and members of his family on the night of 14/15 August, His detailed description of the bloodbath in the Presidential villa moves from room to room, execution to execution. The youngest victim was Mujib’s ten-year old son.

Recounting the chronicle of political killing that stretched from Mujib’s murder to the eventual rise to power of General Hussain Muhammad Ershad in 1983, Tripathi describes a “cycle of violence, revenge, and reprisals” in which “junior officers had killed Mujib and replaced him with Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad; Khaled Mosharraf removed Mostaq; Taher had Khaled Mosharraf killed and released Zia; Zia had Taher executed in jail after a secret trial; gave immunity to the junior officers but sent them overseas; other officers killed Zia, and Manzur was blamed; army officers then had Manzur killed. This was Ershad’s moment.”

Bangladesh still struggles with the legacy of its violent birth. “The Colonel Who Would Not Repent” is an authoritative and highly readable account of the war, its origins and its aftermath. It skillfully illuminates the country’s recent past in a way that sheds light on its present.

Simply good book to have...
By Crazy88Line Cook
This is a very pretty book with many full pages of color photos of the food although the cooked results at home do not always match the images exactly. What really counts is flavor, after all, and these surprisingly easy to prepare dishes are packed with flavor.
The Chicken Wings in Vietnamese Caramel sauce were delicious but not nearly as red as those pictured in the book, nor as charred looking. (Perhaps those were finished on a grill?)
The book is great for cooks across the board; new to the kitchen: dive in and cook what has the least ingredients and feel like a pro.
A pro already? Few of the recipes are challenging but they are an inspiration to look at certain foods in a different way.Lentils with tamarind sauce is a good example.
Another nice feature to this book is that a few classic cocktail recipes are included which helps to round out a menu if you want to make an entire meal for the purpose of home entertaining. It also suggests alternative meats and various substitutions throughout in case you are a timid first time cook or a lazy pro; one stop shopping for all. Well worth the price.

the best book i have ever read
By A Customer
The best book that I have read all year has to be Left at the Altar by Kate William .One of the reasons is because the book is like a mystery but then it turns into romance then back to a mystery. The next thing is the details of the story turns out the way you don't want it to! It's like somebody's going to kill somebody but that person kills them self instead. The final reason I like this book is the description of the story they explain everything of every detail so you would understand it better. Let me give you a brief summary of the book. The main characters are Elizabeth, Jessica, Sue, and Jeremy. Elizabeth and Jessica are the two twin sisters, and Jeremy and sue are the couple that supposed to get married. Until one day Elizabeth catches Jessica and Jeremy kissing. But poor sue doesn't know a thing. Then one day any old regular day Sue got a tragic letter saying that she has cancer. But Jessica gets stubborn and won't let Jeremy get married. So Jeremy has only one choice, should he or should he no?. I think that every body should read this good but tragic mystery.

Made in the USA
By TChris
The Patriot Attack -- excuse me, Robert Ludlum's The Patriot Attack -- wasn't written by the long-deceased Ludlum. Despite the appearance of the name "Jason Bourne" in the cover's largest font, this isn't a Jason Bourne novel. If you don't develop unfulfilled expectations based on the publisher's questionable marketing tactics, you'll find a reasonably entertaining Covert One novel written by Kyle Mills, one of the more reliable authors in the Ludlum factory.

The premise is refreshing, in that it turns away from tired stories about Middle Eastern terrorists and focuses on a potential war between China and Japan which, if initiated by China, might require the United States to honor treaty obligations by coming to Japan's defense. The title doesn't have much to do with the story but the word "Patriot" apparently sells books so there it is.

The story begins with a mad scientist's "What have I done?" moment in Japan. The Patriot Attack then turns to the present as Jon Smith dodges bullets and crossbow bolts to recover a package. The package leads to evidence that someone in Japan is about to unleash a weapon that risks the destruction of all life on the planet. As one of the characters notes, it's the sort of doomsday weapon that should never be developed, much less unleashed.

The novel takes a sophisticated view of China's internal problems and the dilemma that the United States would face if China and Japan were at war. America is economically dependent on China, both as a manufacturer of consumer goods for American vendors and as a lender that holds a huge amount of American debt. America also has strong economic ties with Japan, not to mention a defense treaty. China arguably has an incentive to attack Japan as a means of winning the support of an increasingly restless population, although China has little incentive to take on the American military or to lose the income it receives from American businesses. On the other hand, Japan would be trounced if it started a war with China ... unless, of course, it had a convenient doomsday weapon and a madman who was willing to launch it.

Series regular Randi Russell is given a prominent role while Fred Klein is relegated to infrequent appearances (which is fine since he's the kind of wooden character who speaks without moving his lips). The story is fanciful but it is told in a credible way that builds excitement. The ending is easier and more abrupt than Ludlum himself would have delivered, but as a factory-based novel, this one isn't bad. And, to its credit, the Ludlum factory doesn't outsource labor to China.

Though Not Ludlum Quality, a Good Introduction to the Next Generation of Suspense, Action-Adventure Espionage Thrillers
By Bill Anderson
Length: 528 pages.

I bought this book for two primary reasons. I loved Robert Ludlum's many varied novels and characters. The first novel I listened to, on cassette tape, was back during the late 1980's, I think. Possibly even before that. Point is, Ludlum was good at suspense and intrigue, plus excelled at developing characters.

Which brings us to The Patriot Attack, ostensibly a Jason Bourne novel. Be forewarned, this is not a Bourne continuation. Not even remotely a Bourne novel. Strike one.

Another reason I purchased this book was due to my pleasure from a just-released novel concerning Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp. Terrific stand alone that, I surmised, if Kyle Mills could replicate Rapp so well, yet produce a terrific stand alone sequel such as The Survivor, well, maybe I had better read the latest installment of Covert One. What Mills did so well with Rapp, he, uh, fell far short of the mark with The Patriot Attack. Why?

The premise, Japan and China, is a brilliant stroke. What hurt was the initial setting of our heroine, Randi Russell, in Egypt pursuing American-born, Charles Hashem, who is of Iranian descent, At first take, this seemed plausible. Well, except that he is a Muslim named Charles, of Iranian descent, not Arab, set in Egypt.

Despite its implausibility, for me, having lived in Egypt some 15 years and in Libya for another two, plus having spent time in Israel, Palestine and in the Gulf the setting of an Persian in Arabian Egypt was not well executed. But, then, I excused that as just an obligatory initial, get-the-feel sort of transition point to get us set to depart from, to go to the Orient.

And, since I spent a good deal of time in nuclear energy (as a welding inspector) I found it a great idea to base this novel on the aftermath of Japan's quake and tsunami. Brilliant stroke, thought I.

That premise was smart. Remains so. And, the novel actually is well-written so long as one forgets about Jason Bourne and Robert Ludlum and an Iranian terrorist in Egypt.

A bigger mistake, it seems to me, is that Kyle Mills ended it with a stunning twist that may, or may not be, a cliffhanger. It seems to have been written with an eye to a sequel, but not necessarily so. Sort of a teaser ending reminding me of the lady and the tiger...

Having ranted about what I did not enjoy, or at least, what I had to meander through at a snail's pace, my wriggling was actually well worth the effort, as will be seen by the balance of this review.

Randi Russell is an interesting heroine that, I am sure, may become sort of a female Mitch Rapp, if there are actually more Covert One or Jason Bourne novels forthcoming. Perhaps Mills will sedgeway Rapp into a joint venture with Russell and, thereby, put a nail in the coffin, so to speak, in the Ludlum franchise.

And, let's be honest here, Ludlum has been gone so long that it is time to create a fresh legacy in the line, rather than merely milk the legacy for a few dollars more.

Except that The Patriot Attack is a bit fluffier than the story line justifies, and aside from the above noted strikes, this tome is not a strike out. Nor is it a home run. It is something in between these to points. It is worth reading and, I am sure, in time I will buy the audible.com version and enjoy listening to it.

By all means, I do recommend reading this good novel. Bear in mind, though, it is clearly not Ludlum. Nor does it measure up to Ludlum's best work. If you do keep that in mind, I am betting you will find great pleasure in reading Robert Ludlum's The Patriot Attack.

Note: I originally rated this at five stars. After a couple hours thinking it over, I raised the rating to five stars. Why? I think I was a bit too hard on Mills. In part, because Ludlum set such a high standard and, in part, because I was so delighted with his work with Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp that I thought he had done as well replicating one of my other favorite characters, Jason Bourne.

In other words, I wasn't fairly grading Mills's writing of this book.

Where's the Action?
By Sharon Teeslink
Robert Ludlum would never have written a novel like this with so little action and so much time spent with so many people doing little. OK some of that is necessary to produce the plot, but this was excessive. Very disappointed. Jon Smith is a good character but this book did not the extent of his capabilities.

So far no one has come close to Ludlum's talents of action, plot development and character appeal. He was the master of intrigue and action!
