Chapter 6 explains the process of procurement, including the use of requests for proposals, sole source agreements, and invitations for bids.

Chapter 7 examines installation issues and the development of operating procedures. The chapter stresses that these procedures should be developed during the system design process just as the hardware and software functions are developed. System tuning and training are also addressed.

This anthology of classical, contemporary, philosophical and legal essays/cases focuses on legal philosophy as its own subject—rather than being a part of social/political philosophy or applied ethics. The essays within this reader focus on how law is organized and the particular philosophical issues that it raises. About the Author

John Arthur was a professor of philosophy and director of the Program in Philosophy, Politics, and Law at Binghamton University. He was the author of The Unfinished Constitution: Philosophy and Constitutional Practice (1989), Words That Bind: Judicial Review and the Grounds of Modern Constitutional Theory (1995), and Race, Equality, and the Burdens of History (2007), among other works. He also edited the widely used ethics anthology, Morality and Moral Controversies.

William H. Shaw is professor of philosophy at San Jose State University. He is the author of Marx’s Theory of History (1978), Moore on Right and Wrong: The Normative Ethics of G. E. Moore (1995), Contemporary Ethics: Taking Account of Utilitarianism (1999), and Business Ethics (6th ed. 2008). He has edited several volumes, including (with John Arthur), Justice and Economic Distribution (2nd ed. 1994).

Terrible Binding

The binding from this publisher is horrible! I have seen three different editions and all of the binding has been broken. I borrowed the first copy of the book from the library; the second copy I have seen is the one I ordered, the 4th edition, and I know someone in class that has a brand new 5th edition. The pages were falling out of the binding in each one of these. I'm sorry I cannot offer another suggestion. If you have to have this book for a course buy the cheapest edition you can, pull each article out of the book when it falls out and staple them. Unfortunately, that's the best you can do.

A much needed corrective to rampant individualism

Christianity in North America and Europe tends to buy into the Enlightenment ethos of "enlightened self-interest" and "rational individualism." The individual as free agent is the starting point for thinking about society, and this of course reduces community to little more than a collection of individuals who come together out of self-interest. A Christianity saturated with this way of thinking about the relation between persons and society tends to focus too much on individual salvation and individual sin and too little on the Kingdom of God as communitarian ideal, collective salvation, and corporate sin.
The underlying principle of Archbishop Tutu's Christian ethics is the African notion of "ubuntu." Ubuntu is a difficult word to translate, but it connotes community, with the understanding that it's impossible to isolate persons from community, that there's an organic relationship between all people such that when we see another, we should recognize (an important word for Tutu) ourselves and the God in whose image all people are made. Interdependence and reciprocity, not independence and self-sufficiency, are the keys here. As Tutu magnificently says, "A self-sufficient human being is subhuman. I have gifts that you do not have, so consequently, I am unique--you have gifts that I do not have, so you are unique. God has made us so that we will need each other. We are made for a delicate network of interdependence." (p. 35)
Michael Battle, an African-American theologian who lived and worked for a while in South Africa, has written a comprehensive and lucid account of Tutu's understanding of ubuntu. He carefully explores its ethical, theological, and spiritual implications for Tutu and, by association, for contemporary Christianity. Battle is generous in his quotes from Tutu, but he also provides insightful commentary on Tutu's words. Strongly advised for anyone wishing to explore Christian social ethics. I recommend it be read along with Bishop Tutu's *No Future Without Forgiveness.*

The philosophy of life

I'd recently heard of the concept of "Ubuntu" and being a healer and mom it resonated with me so much that I thought I'd like to read about it. The idea that what you do for yourself is not as fulfilling as the sharing of the collective hits home for me. In our house we dedicate ourselves to loving, sharing, overcoming the natural tendencies of selfishness to find true joy.

In my life I share myself with my children, husband, family, friends. When they do well I am happy for them. It was shocking to me the way my husband's sister (ostensibly a progressive) took her brothers inheritance as her own (and now is grossly obese, and probably won't live as long as she could-but that's Cnorher story). Following the philosophy of Ubuntu, she would have shared generously to her brother and his children-been equitable and even over generous to the one she loved. Perhaps then she would be fit, healthy and most importantly, have more live of her brother, his wife, and their children. Because family and blood are a deep connection-almost karmic and until that is healed and made right, there is no peace nor health.

I love Ubuntu! I will strive to incorporate this idea and philosophy into my life every day.

He was, therefore, in a unique position to learn the underlying philosophy and theology that led to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa, a major reason for the peaceful transition to full democracy and the avoidance of the blood bath that many had expected.

Required book for speech class.

I do not care for this book. Mostly I just disagree with the information in this book which I do not feel is very scientific. It sounds more like a whining self help book. I cannot recall any particular examples but I was annoyed by some very vague and unhelpful metaphors the author used, which again sounded like jibber jabber rather than some hard scientific principle I should be learning. The book is not difficult to read and appears to be well laid out, perhaps it is just the material I do not care for.

An intriguing read

'The Romanovs: The Final Chapter'. I picked the book up knowing little about the last tsar of Russia; this book provides an in-depth look at the tsar's family's assassination, and all of the efforts taken since 1918 to find and exhume the bodies, and identify the family and non-family members buried together. It sounds dull, and it does get tedious at times, but it was a fairly decent read by book's end. You also get an extended section of the political goings-on between the still-living Romanovs, as well as a (too long) section on the legal wranglings trying to disprove the existence of a number of the false Anastasias.

Just ok. I think this book is a tad overrated according to the reviews it seemed like it was the greatest book ever but it was just alright, kind of a collection of thoughts and prose like poems not really my thing. I wouldn't recommend if you like legitimate poetry but that is my opinion. However this writer shows potential and might be interesting to see another book.

The way each poem was written, you can barely see in your mind how painfully it is to be on your own, dealing with the pain all alone and no one to call for help because its 3am. It is very emotional to read. It brought back memories than i have been through for the past years of my life. That tight feeling in my throat again, i felt it while reading. It is a collection of very wonderful poems. Surely you'll love it.

Art as the expression of an "inner necessity"

This book is the catalogue for the current blockbuster Kandinsky exhibition held at the Guggenheim Museum in NYC, which already appeared in Munich and Paris. It is divided into several chapters which tackle such aspects as Kandinsky and America, Kandinsky's relationship with the art dealer and critic Herwarth Walden, founder of the art gallery, publishing company and art magazine "Der Sturm" in the early 1910's (who was to become one of the major proponents of Kandinsky's art, as well as that of the other members of the Blaue Reiter), Kandinsky and abstraction (and the sources of inspiration that lead the artist to follow such a radical path), etc. An interesting essay by Vivian Endicott Barnett (one of the most respected Kandinsky scholars) studies the artist's career as a succession of self-recreations and decisive turning points.

Even though there are no close-ups, the illustrations are of a high quality and manage to give the viewer a fair idea of the explosive power of Kandinsky's large compositions and of his gift as one of the major colorists in the history of art. The accompanying essays have, to my knowledge, no equivalent in other publications in English, and therefore this book is a must-have for anyone interested in the "founder of abstraction".

Poor Book Design

In what should have the ultimate Kandinsky book is instead a major let down. The book starts off great, the cover is a nice composition and the circles are actually die cut circles in the white cover to show the colored circles underneath. After that about 2/5 of the book is devoted to critical analysis of Kandinsky. I could have done without this part in exchange for more artwork. The book itself is small in size for an art book which is a problem considering the complex compositions of Kandinsky's paintings. Once you get to the plates there is, unfortunately, too much white space around the images. So you effectively get reproductions that are postcard size---much too small to really enjoy the artwork. Because of the small illustrations I'm giving this just 1 star. There aren't a lot of Kandinsky books so you don't have much choice out there. I ended up passing on this and give it a recommendation only for the die-hard Kandinsky collectors.

worthwhile Kandinsky overview

Life must have been tough for Kandinsky. Born in Odessa in 1866, his parents divorced when he was aged 5 and he suffered from depression in his youth. At the age of 30 Kandinsky bravely relinquished a promising legal career and moved to Munich to study art. The onset of World War 1 caused him to return to his homeland, only to be embroiled in the Russian Revolution. All his family wealth was confiscated during this time and his only child, Vsevolod, died aged 2, partially as a result of malnutrition. His stay in Germany was cut short by the rise of National Socialism, resulting in a further transfer to Paris in 1933. He died there of a stroke in 1944.

It is fascinating to observe the changes in Kandinsky's style with his geographic moves. This is clearly deliniated in this catalogue of the present Guggenheim exhibition. Kandinsky's most important phase coincided with his stays in Munich and Murnau (1908-14). This is where he developed his initial abstract style. Although his later works (Paris) are regarded as less significant, I enjoy the playfulness and impeccable sense of color and balance of this period.

This catalogue gives an excellent overview of Kandinsky's work and life. Most of the introductory essays and painting annotations are informative and help shed light on the artist's sometimes difficult and esoteric style. An exception is Matthias Haldemann's prolix artspeak essay eg " The picture-in-picture principle makes itself known as a kind of reflection. It is generated and dissolved like visibility as an interaction from outside and inside, and with that, subject to iconicity." Work that out if you can!

The print and reproduction quality of this book is above average. It is a pity however that the page size is on the small side; a larger format would have shown Kandinsky's works to far better advantage. Recommended with minor reservations.
