Mike Walsh does a great job of offering the truth to all who are will to listen. These men deserve to have their names and reputations restored, we easily believe the perceived evil of men and disbelieve the good. Reading this book reminds me to stop, think and reflect.

Judgement day must come soon!

An interesting and eye opening account of extordinary men that were heroes but labeled evil because they fought for the "wrong side." Just what nations were the right side? Let me ask you the following questions. 1. Did the Axis powers declare absolute unrestricted bombing on any of the opposing Allies with the sworn purpose to destroy as many innocent lives, men, women, children, babies and infants, as possible? No, only evil for evil does as evil is. 2. Did the German POW camps purposely starve, enslve, kill, or treat inhuman any Allied prisoners? No! But Eisenhower did and on purpose with the goal of killing as many Germans as possible by the above methods. I am very ashamed of him and my country for the war crimes that we committed then and are continuing to do. 3. Did any German policy steal land from people who had been living in their homes for centuries then expel them to die by the millions, penniless and robbed of their homes and possessions. 4. Did any German soldier commit massive and sustained rape and pillage of the people they had conquered? Who were the evil? The Allies did all of this and more. America, you are no longer a Christian nation and lost this wonderful blessing when you first brought slaves to America then slaughtered off the American Indian and then went into a killing unchristian frenzy that is going on this very hour. All I can say is there will be a day of reckoning and judgement will fall and God help the evil for their destruction will be complete and horrible in extent.

A wonderful new adventure into an old story

A wonderful new adventure into an old story! I love the stories of the Old Testament. The themes that run through them are startling in their revelation of the human condition and God's pursuit. This Graphic novel is a great take on some of those themes. And I found that my son enjoyed picturing the story he has known for so long. He is 9 and he was also able to ask questions and make profound observations about some of the new ideas he saw as he read. For me that is high praise! Inviting kids to interact with the story of God in many different ways is a passion of mine! This book does that. It invites imagination to the table. Once imagination joins this dance - amazing things happen. The illustrations are lovely. I especially love the pictures of God creating Adam and Eve. A great read all the way around.

Seeling and Cariello imagine what Creation must have been like from the perspective of two very different angels

QUICK HIT – A picture is worth a thousand words, or so the saying goes. In this graphic novel retelling of the story behind the story of Creation, Seeling and Cariello imagine what Creation must have been like from the perspective of two very different angels.

We know the story of Creation. Let there be light! and everything that follows.

We know the story of the Fall. Let me be my own authority! and everything that has followed.

We even know the story behind the story. The I wills… The fall before the Fall, the transformation of God’s light-bearer Lucifer into the prince of darkness named Satan.

But we’ve never seen it quite like this. Illustrator Sergio Cariello tackles a difficult project with an adept hand, expertly retelling the story of Creation in a visually compelling way. Seeling provides equally strong writing, and while his dialogue seems hokey and unnatural at times, it overall captures the correct sentiment.

Rather than focus on the actually story of Creation, The Action Bible: The Battle Begins sees Creation from the perspective of two very different angels—Michael and Lucifer—and records their conversations as Jesus creates. Michael is overwhelmed by the Creator’s inventiveness; Lucifer is afraid this new creation will upset the status quo.

The one thing I think parents should note is that The Battle Begins is not an illustrated Bible. Especially as it takes a look at the motives of Lucifer’s fall, it actually is quite speculative and imaginative. That’s not to say it’s wrong, just don’t treat this like a visual representation of the Bible. Use it to cultivate conversations with your child about their thoughts on Lucifer’s motivations and whether and what they think their own response would be.

It can be difficult to get your child/tween talking about (or reading) the Bible, and The Action Bible is a great gateway. With its stunning visuals and solid stories, visual learners especially are going to be drawn into Scripture in a whole new way. If you know a young fan of comics, or maybe a young person who doesn’t like to read, this is a great way to get them started in the journey of Scripture.

The creation story with a paraphrase of events The art was good. The interpretation was a little strange.

'The Battle Begins: The Story of Creation' is part of the Action Bible. This is a graphic novel version of the Bible, but it's best, at least in this case, to think of it more as a loose paraphrase than an exact translation.

The story starts in the time before the events in Genesis with the start of the fall of Lucifer story. Michael and Lucifer have differing opinions about this new creation idea, and Lucifer feels like he should be more important. This is setting the stage for later. We then move to the creation story with Jesus being the one doing the creating. We see John 1:1 quoted here, and this explains his part of the Holy Trinity and why he would be present during creation. God creates Adam, and Adam comes across as a bit slow on the uptake. He runs around shouting out names for animals and seems generally clueless. We then see the fall of Lucifer and his tempation of Eve and Adam followed by their ejection from the Garden of Eden. The book finishes with a scene from the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem in the New Testament.

The art by Sergio Carillo is quite good. I've liked his style in the Lone Ranger book that I read. This is my first read of the Action Bible series, and it looks like he does most of the art for this series which would give the series some nice consistency. Where I guess I might have taken issue is with some of the interpretive nature of the book. We know that Lucifer was cast out of heaven over pride issues. We know that he shows up in the Garden of Eden as a serpent, but we don't know the exact details, so what we get here is not a strict scriptural interpretation of those events, but a writer's paraphrase of events. The portrayal of Adam struck me as a bit strange. He seems clueless and a bit of an airhead. Granted, he's a newly created being, and maybe I've never given much thought to it, but it still seemed like not a very idyllic state, especially when he meets Eve and jumps up, ADD-like, to name a gazelle. Jesus is nice, but he seems not very clued in to the dissatisfaction happening with Lucifer. I wanted him to be more powerful and all-knowing. I liked it, but just not as much as some of the other reviewers.

About the Author

Professor Subrata Bhattacharjee, known by his friends as Sooby, earned a B.Tech. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 1983 and his Ph.D. from Washington State University, Pullman, USA in 1988. After two years of post-doctoral work on a NASA project, he joined San Diego State University in 1991 and currently holds Professorship in Mechanical Engineering Department and Adjunct Professorship in Computer Science Department.

 

Professor Bhattacharjee has been actively involved in research in radiation heat transfer, combustion, computational thermodynamics, and development of software for educational purposes. For his dissertation, he developed a modified two-flux method (Effective Angle Method) for calculating radiative source term and used this model to study two-way coupling between radiation and fluid dynamics in a laminar diffusion flame. Working on a project on jet flow in boundary layers, he came upon a new non-dimensional group that compares a known pressure drop with viscous forces. This number is being used in textbook and literature in connection with electronic cooling.

 

Throughout his research career, Dr. Bhattacharjee has been interested in uncovering the mechanism of flame spread over solid fuels, especially in a microgravity environment. His work helped establish the dominance of radiation heat transfer in near quiescent environment. He has been a PI and co-PI of several projects funded by NASA. Some of his contributions include: 1. Discovery of the phenomenon that flame over thick fuel bed in a quiescent microgravity environment self-extinguishes irrespective of the oxygen level; 2. Development of a formula for a critical thickness that renders a fuel thick in such an environment; 3. Development of two formulas for flame spread rate, one in the thin limit and one in the thick limit, which are the only flame spread formulas ever developed in the microgravity regime. Several of his experiments on flames over solids have been conducted aboard NASA's Space Shuttles, Sounding Rockets, and Russia's Mir Space Station. One of his recently proposed experiments is currently under design to be conducted in the International Space Station.

 

Under a current grant from NASA, Prof. Bhattacharjee and his team is building a 10 m tall Flame Tower at SDSU to conduct some fundamental experiments to predict the behavior of flames in a gravity free environment of a spacecraft. These ground based work is in support of the proposed space based experiment. In this work, researchers from Gifu University, Japan, are collaborating with SDSU.

 

Supported by NSF, Dr. Bhattacharjee has been developing a novel cyber infrastructure for multi-scale approach to thermodynamic data and chemical equilibrium services. Users can now plug in these services and "outsource" the data used in their thermofluids calculations. By simply altering key words such as NASA, NIST, or AB-INITIO, for example, they can change the source of data used in their research applications. Likewise, equilibrium calculations can be integrated into any CFD code written in FORTRAN, MATLAB, or any other language through a relatively new technology called web services. The chemical equilibrium program developed by Dr. Bhattacharjee's group is equally powerful as NASA's benchmark CEA and offers a built-in parallel architecture.

 

Prof. Bhattacharjee's passion for making thermodynamics easier to master led to the development of a web based software called TEST, the Expert System for thermodynamics (www.pearsonhighered.com/bhattacharjee), which has been used by students, professionals and educators from around the world. Several articles and one book have been written about the use of TEST in thermodynamic education.

James Chambers was born in Northern Ireland and educated at Harrow and Christ Church, Oxford. After reading for the Bar he researched and wrote documentary film scripts and worked in film production. A life-long interest in military history led to The Devil's Horsemen.

Great Read!

I wasn't sure if I should give this 4 stars or 5. Its hard to rate because it is, well, just different from most history books.

The book is just a plain, great read. I read a decent number of history books. Now, most scholars go out of their way to present their case, and back it up with quotes, research, confirming details, archaeology, etc. The reader comes away with a great sense and a fine argument.

This book is history, but it doesn't give supporting details. It is fast and fun to read -- in that respect, it reminds me of Livy or Herodotus!

The lack of supproting material does not necessarily mean he is wrong. I think he is best when speculating on motives, explaining the why's of the mindsets of the leaders of the West and of the Mongols. I actually bought the arguments better than a lot of the scholarly works I read. However, there are clearly times he discusses topics for which his knowledge is inferior as other reviewers have said.

The book is also weird in its subject matter. What exactly is the focus of the book? When I read the first chapters, I thought the book was a de facto tribute to the brillaint general Subudai. But this changes. It also isn't just about the campaigns in the West, but thre is more material about Western Campaigns.

My conclusion is that the author loves the period of time, and is fascinated by the Mongols, and wishes to talk about them. If you want to learn a lot about the period, and really ENJOY reading a book, this is as highly recommended a book as I can think of. If, however, you want history presented with well deveolped arguments and theory, pass.

Historical Discovery

I had been in the dark about the Mongols, relegating them to the endless and anonymous Steepe invaders of European history. I learned the Mongols stood out as one of the most impressive armies in history. They rank as the most powerful army (in relative terms) ever, perhaps rivaled only by the American forces in 1945, and as the most brutal, even more ferocious and destructive than the Japanese Imperial Army. They are the standard for which all other armies should be measured, yet strangely they have been relegated to as asterisk in history. I am in awe of the Mongols under the supreme command of Genghis Khan and his peerless generals Subedai and Obedai. This book was one of the most concise, chronological, and logical historical books that I have ever read about any historical subject. This hidden treasure of a book owes much to the brilliant subject, the well-studied author and the unpretentious storytelling. It gets my highest recommendation; prepare to be impressed. I am very lucky to have found this book.

They Were the Devil's Horsemen

What can really be said about the Mongol army. They had an excellent leader (Gengis Kahn) and they understood, and were trained for warfare like no other army before them, and I dare say after them. They were Brutal and swift. James Chambers does an excellent job showing how the Mongols nearly conquered the entire world. Had Odgedei Kahn not died an untimely death, the golden hoard would have swept through Europe. One could only imagine how history could have been changed if the armies had not retreated. Which leads to another point Mr. Chambers makes which adds to his work. The fact that as their empire expanded, they did not have the manpower to effectively rule what they conquered. This was demonstrated by infighting among princes ruling in the outlying conquered territory. They, in essence, began to crumble from within. As the Chinese explained it to Gengis Kahn, what you conquer by horseback you can not govern by horseback. In essence it is what happened to the Mongols. Check this book out if you want an easy to read, concise history, of the Mongol army.
