Recommended Practical Guide

I've only read part way through, but I can attest that at least the first 10-chapters have been extremely useful to me. The techniques suggested, like "The Creativity 2-Step", have already born fruit.

If you have any trouble developing your ideas, finding the spine of your story, or feeling your brain is cluttered with too much material, I would highly recommend you consider this practical guide.

Be aware, the author has chosen to provide the book in a serialized version online on their website for free. I chose to buy the Kindle version to have access without internet, ease of reading and search.

Waste of money

Utter Rubbish. - this was my first review and I was pulled up rather harshly for not giving any reasons behind it ... so herewith my reasoning.
In the very first paragraph of the book Melanie states: "Simply follow the instructions and by the time you are finished, you will have written your book."
You will not have done any such thing. You will have pages and pages and pages of questions about your characters' ages and the setting for your book and (if you stuck with this methodology) pages and pages of answers to them.
Melanie Anne Phillips is one of the developers of Dramatica - screenwriting software that is pretty well known and quite highly regarded. It was for this reason that I actually bought this book. Dramatica gives very precise details on ways to develop a screen story, therefore I assumed that this book would be as good for novels.
Perhaps if you are a complete novice at writing you will appreciate the very long-winded, very detailed chapter giving Melanie's reasons for selecting one age over another to award to her characters - but I was hoping for a little more meat.
And I guess that sums up my problem with this book - it is very long to say very little. You are better off going to the Dramatica website and just reading the articles they have there.
Or buy a different book.

A Valuable Resource For Those Interested in Eschatology

This is not really a book one reads linearly from beginning to end, though you could. It is more a reference guide to "last days madness" (to borrow the title of another of American Vision's books) as it has manifest itself throughout the centuries. The book is broken up into chapters each of which is devoted to a specific aspect of eschatology such as the millennium, the abomination of desolation, the anti-Christ, wars and rumors of wars, the "rapture", etc. Within each chapter are date headings under which we find some of the beliefs expressed at the time regarding the return of Christ. What becomes immediately obvious after reading several of these is that our present day does not have the market cornered on the belief that we are the last generation or in assigning prophetic significance to contemporary world events.

We find out for example that in A.D. 449 a deacon at Carthage named Quodvultdeus wrote in a book called Book on Promises and Predictions that "the barbarian invasions in his lifetime were signs of the End. He identified the Goths and the Moors as Gog and Maygog." Kind of a 3rd century The Late, Great Planet Earth !

Later we read that Sir Walter Raleigh in 1615 believed that Gog and Maygog were the Pope and Spain and that the Turks were the locusts in the Book of Revelation.

Examples of this kind go on and on for a variety of eschatological topics. The one thing they all have in common is that they were later proven wrong by the passage of time. Another interesting feature of the book is a series of some 20 charts outlining things such as candidates for the anti-Christ at various points in history or different views on the meaning of the mark of the beast. As with the narrative examples, the common thread is that all of these beliefs have been proven wrong.

Some examples in the book have been proven wrong before the very eyes of people still living today such as Chuck Smith's prediction that the "rapture" would occur in 1981.

Having been raised on dispensational premillennialism, I remember it coming as a surprise to me that others throughout history had made similar predictions to those being made by people like Hal Lindsey. As with many in this belief system, I felt that what men like Lindsey were teaching was unique to our time and was based on a literal interpretation of the Bible. A book like this which has essentially done all the research for you (the footnotes are extensive for those interested in tracking down original sources) is an valuable resource for debunking that thought and the newspaper exegesis going on today.

Well Researched and Entertaining

Francis Gumerlock, a classmate of mine, has done a great job of research here. He chronicles the false interpretations of end-time prophecy throughout church history. You will learn about some of the most bizarre scoundrels and heretics in church history as well as some orthodox folks who were simply reading the Bible in light of world events rather than the opposite. Reading this book is a good way to get a jolt of humility in this day and age when prophecy books about a future antichrist run rampant (The Left Behind series, for instance). This is definitely one to add to your library -- I can think of no book like it.

Good for Teens and young adults

Make 'em Say UHHHH

Hands down- this was one of the best books I've read.

Like many youths at the time, I was heavily influenced by hip-hop music and culture of the late 90's. Through this book, Master P has mastered the way to inspire generation hip hop (no pun intended).

The book succeeds as the content is focused more on aiding the reader in his or her quest to success than simply a biography of P's life. Although Master P has shaken his former Ice Cream Man image, he has an extremely motivating rags to riches story and uses this personal journey as a backdrop to encourage and help the reader find his or her own path.

The kicker is that in this book you write just as much as you read. Yes, you actually WRITE in the book. Through stimulating questions, Master P challenges the reader to provide written answers to various questions that were instrumental in his personal success. Through these written answers, readers have no choice but to 1)self reflect 2) identify key areas for personal growth and 3) determine what's hindering his or her journey to success.

As a member of generation Hip Hop, this is definitely one of the best motivational books I've read to date... but you don't have to take my word for it #readingrainbow.

The scientific exploration of psi

It is disappointing when publishers re-publish their books with different covers and titles hoping to dupe unsuspecting customers into buying the same book twice over. This book, The Noetic Universe, is in fact almost an exact copy, page for page, of The Conscious Universe published by HarperCollins in 1997. The book itself is excellent and I can do no better than reproduce my review of the same book under its earlier title. But I do deplore this kind of commercial exploitation of a public eager to keep up with developments in this field.

Dean Radin's scientific background is in electrical engineering and psychology, but he has focussed his attention for more than a decade now on parapsychology or psi. This excellent book gives some of the scientific methodology that has confirmed that psi is a real phenomenon of the world and not the `superstitious nonsense' that some critics would have us believe. The title of the book derives from this world-view of the universality of psychic phenomena: `both modern physics and ancient Buddhist doctrine suggest [that] `deep' interconnectedness embraces everything, unbound by the limitations of time and space.' Radin agrees with the idea of Sir Arthur Eddington that `the stuff of the world is mind-stuff'.

The book is divided into four parts: 1. Motivation, with a definition of psi and some of the statistical techniques used for validation of experimental results; 2. Evidence. This section, representing nearly half of the book, gives us some of the evidence for telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, and psychokinesis - the most studied and best authenticated forms of psi; 3. Understanding. This section deals with the interpretation of the data and how the world-views of physics and philosophy (metaphysics) have been changed by discoveries in the 20th century; 4. Implications - what these empirical data tell us about the nature of the universe in terms of biology, psychology, sociology, philosophy, religion and medicine.

This may sound like a scientific treatise - well, I suppose it is really - but it is presented in a very accessible style for readers without a scientific or mathematical background, though there is some gentle statistical theory in Section 1, Chapter 3, on Replication. There are 20 pages of Notes that tell us where these experiments and ideas were published. There are a further 30 pages of References and Further Reading, so anyone can follow up on any topic to various levels of scientific sophistication. Finally there is a comprehensive Index.

One could scarcely ask for a more lucid introduction to the scientific techniques used to investigate parapsychology with the supporting evidence that these have produced: this should be enough to convince many of the sceptics.
