Very useful book for homeopath.

I've bought this book to help my homeopath to make a translation into Russian for his own everyday use. He thinks this book has may be one of the most brief, convenient and complete description of remedies. Could be applied not only to women treatement but to children and men as well - the section "Concomitants" vividly represent general simptoms typical for every remedy. As a patient now I've got much deeper understanding of what is called simptoms and should be reported to the doctor.

The definitive Hoshin Kanri book

I've spent some time looking at several different Hoshin Kanri (hoshin - navigation or compass, kanri - control) texts, a.k.a "Policy Deployment." I personally think that this is overall the best one, hand's down. It's a tricky subject, with many "moving parts" and few examples available to view firsthand (I've seen it only a few times myself). I mention other books, but have not reviewed them, because they were so bad I couldn't even finish them and I have a rule to not review any book I haven't read.

This review compares this to several other ones (as best I could), plus for consistency of philosophy with other lean/operational excellence concepts. Most lean texts I've read barely mention Hoshin, if at all. Even when they do, then do so poorly or with too little detail to help you other than to make you aware that it exists.

This book helps fill a huge gaping void in the understanding and implementation of the lean enterprise.

Pro:
+A clear linkage to Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycles at different levels... at last! Cascading PDCA is critical to success.
+Excellent examples of the x-matrix and various styles of A3 report
+A Shingo Prize winning text, and it has definitely earned this honor!
+Goes well above expectation, digging deeper into "DNA" teaming elements/systems that creates deeper understanding of "why" we do hoshin, not just "how"
+Sets clear roles for who should do what, when, and of course why and how
+Superb examples of A3 reports of all different sorts
+Generally well written and interesting despite a potentially dry subject... other books I have on this topic are boring and a fight to read, this was not in the least!

Con:
-Some situtations where I think concepts were compromised or are incorrect, examples: management by walking around (flawed) instead of leader standard work (preferred), and the 7 wastes instead of the more contemporary 8 wastes, plus others not mentioned here.
-Measures do not emphasize a "from X to Y by Z" format, which is a weakness of many x-matrices, especially at the site or departmental level. If you don't know where you are, how can you set a target and follow-up to see how well you are closing the gap? Goals like "reduce scrap 50%" are bogus and against best practices of Hoshin! Better to say, "Scrap from 102 to 51 pieces per day by 10/1" to convey a sense of expectation and quick understanding of where you are.
-Version of the x-matrix touted is very busy and overly complicated with various shapes, violating quick dissemination of information. Suggest the version described in, "The Management Compass" by Michele L. Bechtell.
-Many little errors in formatting, spelling, and even a few where it says see Figure "X" but really meant see Figure "Y"... although you can work around these well enough, it could cast doubts on other material herein (but don't let it be a turn off as the material is wonderful and so well written/presented). Example: The "Engineering" process and "Order Entry" process flows found in Figure 2-4 on page 32 are flipped over - totally backwards! Also, the ORder Entry process is really the Bid process... it appears mislabeled. The flows are presented correctly on page 33 (figures 2-5 and 2-6).

Bottom line: highly recommended. One of the few texts that the lean zealot simply must possess; THE book for Hoshin Kanri. Comes as close to getting a 5/5 stars as one could possibly get and not actually get there. Goes above and beyond what I expected and for difficult subject matter. Other books have some good points (see cons section) however, few, if any, other books that I am aware has the overall scope and content, plus a fantastic execution that makes reading it so enjoyable.

With global warming increasing the intensity of seasonal weather patterns around the world, a review of the methods for estimating seasonal effects on health is timely.

This is the first book on statistical methods for seasonal data written for a health audience. It describes methods for a range of outcomes (including continuous, count and binomial data) and demonstrates appropriate techniques for summarising and modelling these data. It has a practical focus and uses interesting examples to motivate and illustrate the methods. The statistical procedures and example data sets are available in an R package called ‘season’.

Good overview and some good info

Good overview and some good info, but this was the first time lodging recommendations from LP steered me wrong. I stayed in a mid-range place the book recommended in Fort Galle that was awful and while I still like LP books and have used them for years, now I look at travel advisor for lodging.

Read This For a Better Option

So I went on a long trip around SE Asia which included many countries in the area. I was thrilled when I found out that these books were on Kindle. I figured I could download the books instead of carrying a heavy book with the limited space in my pack, and I was going to need a lot of books. For starters, the Kindle books are worthless. Instead of having more information, because they don't have to use more paper, there is less information. In fact, so little that it looks like they put these books together in such a hurry just to get by so they could throw them out there. The formatting is outrageous. Even the worst Kindle books have clickable links so you don't have to scroll back and forth, back and forth, from the index. I asked Amazon for a refund and had them delete the worthless excuse for a publication.
Next, most all of the information in all the different countries' books I looked at in bookstores and from other travelers was way out of date, and these are new books. The worst problem is that there is so little information as to make these books a complete waste of owning. All the great places I stayed at, and everybody else easily found as well, are not in their books. Following Lonely Planet guides actually keeps you from finding all the best places to stay, because you are relying on out of date, poorly researched information. They will tell you things like this is the place all the backpackers go and is the best value, and it will be completely wrong. I went to one place they gave a great review in a new book, and it seemed like a drug den with gangsters running it. The new owners of Lonely Planet have taken the good name of the Wheelers and their past accomplishments, and are milking it for all it's worth without putting in the work.
Here is what I suggest. Go to Google maps to look at the cities or places you plan to go. Even the smallest places like Don Khon, or Thakhek, in Laos, or Cambodia, or wherever, will have hotels listed on Agoda, or Booking.com, or some other site, for example. Just Google the place name and hotels. You will also see other places listed on Google map which have links to reviews, with up to date listings and prices. You will also see where the concentrations of places to stay are in a town, that might not have a link, and then you simply go there and look around. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the way Lonely Planet was getting it's limited information, because in everything I read, it seemed that they had never visited any of the limited places they cover, and when I say limited, I mean limited. How they can have the guts to print out new editions with less information than the previous one is beyond me. My fifteen-year-old edition of India, for example, had more maps than the new book. Anyway, you don't need maps in a book anymore. Everything you need to know is up on the web and current and the smallest villages have internet access.
I would look at fellow traveler's books in disbelief. The people carrying them said they were almost useless. It was a common topic of conversation. Everyone said they would no longer buying these. One guy joked about feeding it to the cows that commonly eat paper out of the trash in India. Seriously, they would be more useful with blank pages so you can write in your own info, or that from other travelers. Don't waste your money or be disrespected by these slackers, who I wouldn't be surprised never travelled farther than their computers to the coffee machine.

About the Author
Makoto Shinkai is a Japanese film director, animator, and writer. A native of the Nagano prefecture in Japan, he studied Japanese literature at Chuo University. He traces his passion for creation to the manga, anime, and novels he was exposed to while in middle school. Considered one of the best animators in the world today, he is often called the "next-Miyazaki". Shinkai developed his abilities as a video game designer for FalCom, where he worked on the cult-classic role-playing game Y"S. Shinkai is unique as an animator as he cut his teeth by producing almost all elements many of his works - from animation to music composition to voice acting. He has won numerous awards: 12th DoGA CG Animation Award; 1st New Tokyo International Animation FestivalGrand Prize; 7th Kobe Animation Prize; 6th Japanese Media Art; Awardfor Digital Media; 34th Nebula Award(World Con); 59th Mainichi Films Animation Prize; 2007 Asia Pacific Film Award; and theLancia Platinum Grand Prize (Italy).

Exceptionally beautiful

I've actually reviewed the original Japanese edition 新海誠美術作品集 空の記憶 ~ The sky of the longing for memories ~ which was published in 2008. Publisher Vertical Comics has provided a huge fan service by translating the book into English. It's certainly worth translating and more people should get to see this book.

The only difference I noticed is the lack of dust jacket. Even the paper used is the low gloss type. Colours are reproduced wonderfully.

A Sky Longing for Memories: The Art of Makoto Shinkai is the artbook that collects the background art for 5 Centimeters Per Second, The Place Promised in Our Early Days and Voices from a Distant Star.

I've watched those three anime films many years ago and can't really remember what the stories were about. But one thing that I cannot forget is the beautiful background art in those films.

The commentary provides talks about the design aspect of each scene and it's really insightful. Now that all the text has been translated to English, I can now understand the amount of work that goes behind each painting.

Attention to details is amazing. You'll find out that all the background art are well researched and tediously put together. Some scenes are the results of several photo references used together, while some others are painted over photos while taking into account the colour scheme. There's research done on design of trains, vending machines, LED lights on signboards, routes of the trains so that they can be accurately portrayed in drawing. To draw Akari's homemade lunch, the staff actually cooked and packed the meal, then photographed it for use as reference. All those tiny words on fare charts, open pages of books are actually all hand drawn in. Environment scenes painted with photo reference take into account the seasons and colour of the air.

There's something about Japanese anime art that makes them look so fine. The level of detail in the background really makes a huge difference to the visual aesthetics. Every piece of art in this book is perfectly composed, and colour scheme carefully chosen. It's just awe-inspiring to see how many pieces of art there are to come out from the films. It's not all from Makoto Shinkai as there are other artists involved as well, many are interviewed at the back of the book. There's also a section that talks about how the scenes are created for animation.

I highly recommend this book for its stunning art.

Beautiful

Makoto Shinkai's art book " a sky longing for memories" is book is a faithful reproduction of the Japanese edition (minus dust jacket and wrap sleeve) in English. The book is filled with stills and background art from Shinkai's films. The book is full color with lots of images and provides tidbits of information on the techniques used to create the color drenched settings that have become Shinkai's signature.

Most of the text in the book is strictly information documenting the scene a image was used. The back section of book includes an artist "how to" describing Shinkai's work process and materials/technology he used. There is also an essay and interview to bring the book to a close.

Scale is too small

I really love Makoto Shinkai backgrounds, colors, details and everything.

It is a good book... but scrolling through pages made me feel like I want to see each picture in a bigger scale, I feel like I need to zoom-in, but I can't (at least full page for each image or larger scale for the whole book would be good).
It is more of a collection of background thumbnails, or pieces that scaled down to that size, than art-book to appreciate every piece of his amazing art. Quite a disappointment for me personally.

Good things, that paper is good. Also, they have part in a book where they talk about techniques of creating these kind of backgrounds. Very nice.
