Generation-spanning tales of the North Pacific from a Pulitzer-winning historian who's also a gifted storyteller. Given the breadth of the claim he's staked on a vast area that extends along a coastal arc from Baja California to China, it's no wonder that McDougall (...The Heavens and the Earth, 1985) chose a Michener-like format for his absorbing if episodic saga. It's the author's elegantly effective conceit that the favorite consort of Hawaii's King Kamehameha has summoned him and others to pass judgment on regional events over a span of nearly four centuries. Among the heavenly guests are Hiresi Saito (Japan's ambassador to the US during the 1930's), Junipero Serra (the Spanish monk whose missions opened Alta California to white settlement), William Henry Seward (Lincoln's secretary of state), and Count Sergey Witte (Tsar Nicholas II's prime minister). With more than a dozen breaks for spirited colloquies with his phantom collaborators, McDougall offers short-take accounts of historical milestones ranging in time from the opening of new sea lanes during the late 16th century through the 1950 outbreak of hostilities between North and South Korea. Covered along the way are oceangoing voyages of discovery (by Captain Cook et al.); development of the fur trade; gold rushes; earthquakes (in Tokyo as well as San Francisco); the impact of transport technologies (steamships, railroads, aircraft); the US purchase of Alaska; imperial Japan's conflicts with Russia; WW II; and more. Entertaining as well as informative

This is a wonderfully entertaining as well as informative book. I already knew bits and pieces of this history, but McDougall puts it together in a very different way by focusing on the struggle to dominate the north Pacific. I was especially unaware of Russia and Hawaii's roles in the area, and I enjoyed his musings on the complexity of the various power struggles and the errors often committed by the players.

Waves of details and facts tempered with speculation

"Let the Sea Make a Noise" forges historical scholarship with insightful notions about the realms encompassing the north Pacific Ocean. The author, Walter A. McDougall, spent untold hours researching and organizing minutia then interweaving vast history replete with sensory details; human and political failings, dreams, and successes; meteorological and geographic facts; and overlooked, obscure bits of history.

Consequently, the book itself is somewhat overwhelming for it is nearly impossible to absorb this level of detail or maintain a clear understanding of the myriad relationships and ideologies the author presents.

I suppose having too much detail is better than not enough in any book of this sort, and Mr. McDougall is never shy about throwing in what may be a touch of conjecture. One cannot really know what some of the many people profiled here might have been thinking, but ultimately the scope of the book prevails, and one must admire the tenacity and effort funneled in to this book.

Be prepared to invest some time reading this history but be forewarned that you may have to put the book down from time to time to let the facts and information swamp you like a big wave---and I found I wasn't always that eager to jump back in for more.

A Glorious Journey Through Time

The best books are those so rich in character and content that you can revisit them time and again, certain that you will discover new layers of enjoyment and insight with each reading. Walter A. McDougall's "Let the Sea Make a Noise... : A History of the North Pacific from Magellan to MacArthur" is just such a book. How fortunate we are that Perennial has newly released this volume in paperback!

McDougall takes the reader on a glorious (though sometimes harrowing) journey through time. He has succeeded in combining painstaking research and carefully considered commentary with a wonderfully woven and witty narrative. This gripping tale of the North Pacific is a genuine page-turner: a rare treat on the menu of today's history books!

Contrary to the lone opinion of a Washington State Amazon reader, rest assured that "Let the Sea Make a Noise..." is a balanced and scholarly presentation of the complexities of international relations. Written in the early 1990s (when Japan's economic prominence in the midst of Soviet collapse was the source of widespread international concern), McDougall's insights in "Let the Sea Make a Noise..." are often profoundly visionary and always poignant and honest. He has done an outstanding job of crafting an entertaining, yet intricate examination of the motivating forces that have shaped a wondrous region of our planet.

Good Read

I enjoyed this book It is a decent book all in all with a good moral lesson. Also very funny in some parts and very witty dialogue. I felt there was one chapter that described how Dorian became obsessed with all different art forms and it went into so much detail and was so annoying that I contemplated aborting the book. I read on and that chapter ended but based on the reviews I read, I felt that they never really got into the important details of how Dorian fell into decadence. Instead they just alluded to it in the past tense with little details where there should have been instead of that bad chapter.

LOVE the book and a side note about why AMAZON is AMAZING!

First of all, this book is GREAT for the novice investor, and broker who is new to the investment industry such as myself. Due to the downsizing of my previous career, I made a career change to the stock market. Crazy I know, but I love it. Technical Analysis is not hard but can be confusing if you are not sure what all of the "pretty" lines represent. This book breaks it down for someone like me to where I can TRULY understand what a chart is telling me. True, charts CAN be subjective, but the numbers don't lie. Charts combined with some fundamentals can make you a powerful investor if you know what you are doing. The book is not so basic that it would bore a knowledgeable investor; even those who have been trading forever can learn something from this book. Murphy makes to where Technical Analysis makes sense! Now...Why do I think the world of Amazon? I've been watching the price of this book for about a year. I ordered this book due to a manager's recommendations (who allowed me to hold on to her book for a couple of months) and my company trainer's STRONG recommendations just recently. (No they do not work for this company and they are NOT receiving any proceeds for the recommendations.) I received the book and from the outside, the book appeared to be perfect. While flipping through the pages, I saw that pages were damaged in one section. I have been ordering from Amazon for years and not once have I ever had to return an item. This was the first one. I received my package on Tuesday, opened it on Wednesday, contacted Amazon via the web instructions, and dropped the book off at the local UPS location on Thursday. Also per Amazon's instructions, they wanted additional feedback on why I was returning the item. After leaving the feedback, I anticipated that I wouldn't receive the book for another week or so. The return instructions were SO easy it made my head spin. That's not even the best part. I was shocked when I saw I received an email that my replacement book was on its way on Thursday. Get this (here's the BEST part)...I received a PERFECTLY new replacement today, Friday. I am thoroughly impressed. My main purpose for ordering the book when I did was to have it in time for me to utilize when I return to my team on Monday. Due to the advanced training we've received at work, this book is something that will be useful for years to come.

The first book you should read in technical analysis

This is my first book in technical analysis, it was given to me by a friend after he tried a lot to convince me that market movement is not random and as any normal guy I used to make fun of it. After reading this book my curiosity to technical analysis went up big time and I started reading a lot about technical analysis, you can see the rest my books in my reviews.
Now and after reading a lot about technical analysis I see this book as one of the solid foundation of my work, most of the basic and guidelines are available here which I tend to come back to from time to time. John Murphy did an excellent work explaining all the details of the technical analysis world. The main work done here is for chart patterns but he also gives a lot of information about the rest of the techniques. I highly recommend this book for any starter in technical analysis.

Tome of Knowledge!

Pros:
This book contains all different aspects of technical analysis that one should consider.
It explains the different indicators that are being used to do analysis.
It is comprehensive in its coverage.

Cons:
Lack of strategies coverage or ways to use different indicators together.
It may lack in depth details on some indicators.
I expected this because it will not be possible for a book to cover everything in details.
Uncommon indicators are not covered. This is not a problem for me but I think it maybe for some of you.

Overall, I gave it 4 stars.
This is a good reference book.
If you are a beginner, this is a very good book.
If you already know the functions of half of the indicators in your charting program. You will find little value in this book.

Best of breed

I may run out of superlatives in the course of this review, so I'm just warning you now. What to Drink with What You Eat is absolutely the most spectacular book ever written about pairing food with wine. It will turn you instantly into a world-class sommelier, confidently able to pair virtually any cuisine with a compatible choice. What's more, the recommendations extend far beyond wine to include beer, sake, spirits coffee, tea and different types of water, so even a teetotaler can derive some value. There isn't a food- or wine-lover on the planet who wouldn't benefit from having the book always on hand as a resource.

The secret sauce here is that the authors, who have great credentials themselves, have also enlisted the input of dozens of top sommeliers and other authorities to create an uber-reference, one that gains considerably from its generous tendency to be more rather than less inclusive in offering up suggestions. Think of the principle of "the wisdom of crowds," but here the crowd are all experts and have the chops to back up their opinions. The list of foods, cuisines and beverages that are explored is truly encyclopedic, so odds are pretty good whatever you want advice on will be covered. For example, speaking of secret sauce, you'll even get suggested pairings with a Big Mac.

The crowning glories of the book are chapters 5 and 6, which really should be turned into a searchable database online and made available via PDA. These chapters are mirror images, one that starts with the beverage and suggests foods, and the other that starts with the food and matches the drinks. I'm telling it to you straight: if you've ever had a moment's hesitation about what to bring to a dinner party or just flat out what might go best with your frozen pizza, the answer is at hand. Wanna build the meal around a special bottle of wine? No problem. In fact, I'm not sure this book isn't subversive in the sense that it does such a great job of simplifying a complicated subject and making it accessible that it renders real-life sommeliers unnecessary.

Of course, that's a ridiculous notion; I'm just stating it for effect. You still need a sommelier to put together a wine list, add a personal perspective, precisely match the cuisine of a restaurant to its wines and gauge the "readiness" of any particular client to explore new territory. But if you live in New Jersey, where the only advantage of archaic, Prohibition-based liquor laws is the plethora of BYO restaurants and thus there are very few sommeliers period, this book is like manna from heaven.

I don't mean to imply that What to Eat is prescriptive to the point where you aren't allowed to express yourself and exercise free will. Quite the contrary. The book does a splendid job in the first few chapters of breaking down various pairing conventions developed over the past 20 years (plus of course the most classic matches) and providing guidelines that anyone can build on, and the authors encourage imagination and experimentation.

Let's go with a real life example, my first since I bought the book, and quite an "acid" test at that. I was asked by a hostess to suggest something that might go with roasted sea bass served with a Mediterranean ragout of red peppers, tomatoes, olives, and capers. My first instinct when approaching anything Mediterranean is to go with the "territory," which means for me clinging to the coastline from Provence to Sicily. Here I would have gravitated toward a white because a tannic red wouldn't go anyway and it's summer now and a chill is definitely welcome. Besides, I'm not sophisticated enough to figure out what to do with capers to begin with, so why not let a thousand years of local experience do the hard work for me? Then, I turned to chapter 5 and looked up sea bass. There were 16 suggestions, but nothing related to a Mediterranean ragout, which would clearly provide the dominant flavors to the dish. So with a little trepidation (are they going to whiff on my first challenge?), I looked for "Mediterranean" and sure enough found the following entry: "Mediterranean Cuisine (eg anchovies, olives, peppers, etc) Champagne, rose; Chateauneuf-du-pape, white; Pinot blanc; red wine, esp. tart Old World; rose; verdicchio, esp with onion-based dishes." Not feeling wholly comfortable yet, I cross-referenced the pesky caper and found: "Beaujolais, high acid; beer; Muscadet; Pinot Grigio/ Pinot gris, esp. dry; Pinot Noir, esp from Russian River Valley." That's enough breadth for anyone to find an appealing option.

The genius of the book is the exhaustive number of dishes and international cuisines covered. I'm sure there are some things you can eat that aren't paired here, but I'm not sure why you would want to! Also, while it wasn't true for my sea bass, many if not most of the listings actually go a step further and provide recommendations specific to the actual method of preparation. It's not just one size fits all. Pasta with artichokes? Check. Pasta with sardines? Check. You get the idea.

I haven't been this excited about a wine book in a couple of years, maybe since reading Andrew Jefford's The New France The New France: A Complete Guide to Contemporary French Wine (Mitchell Beazley Wine Guides). If you have even a passing interest in drinking wine with your meals you'd be crazy not to buy this book. It has the potential to enrich every dinner (and the occasional lunch/brunch/breakfast?/snack) you eat for the rest of your life, and if that isn't enough hyperbole, I don't know what is.

Act Like a Wine Snob without the Attitude

Everyone knows how to spot a wine snob, high class, arrogant, sips a little wine, smells it. Well now you can be that person w/o having to be arrogant. This book will explain what wines go with what foods, why you sniff a wine, how to taste it, what to look for in a wine and many other fun facts.

Everyone knows that red meat and red wine go well together but what goes well with a roast,or short ribs, heck even meatloaf? This book will help you.It goes beyond just main ingredients, it teaches you to also look at the other aspects of it as well such as different herbs, spices, the marinade you use, and how your going to cook it. Even mashed potatoes have more than just potatoes.

I have worked in restaurants and even have a degree in culinary and I must say, this is a good point to start with and even to look back as a reference point. I own all three reference books Culinary Artistry, The Flavor Bible and this one and I read them almost every day. Great series of books by the authors, I trust these books like I trust my chefs at school.

Excellent reading. This time Ryan's book contains straightforward technical information about locations, experiences and entities. Very informative. Understanding portals is the ultimate name of the game. You expect to find a more complex situation when you research a suspected or known portal location. Even if other scientists don't have the guts to study portals it is extremely important to learn how the universe is connected and who out there is coming here on a regular basis. Does anyone else out there have what it takes? There are many portals around the world - you just have to find them. Stop playing games and expand your consciousness for real this time.

Ryan Skinner does it again. Ryan has spent countless hours investigating a ranch in the Uintah Basin region of Utah and has shared information for all to ponder.
