About the Author
Douglas Johnson was self taught in computer science and became a Research and Development engineer in his early twenties without a college degree. After several years, he left engineering to attend university where he completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Mathematics with a Concentration in Physics, graduating Summa Cum Laude (with highest honors) in just 3 years. While finishing the degree, he began photographing art models for a side project that was intended to be used by sculptors. Because it was for sculptors, the models were photographed on a rotating platform. He eventually formed a publishing company, Live Model Books, to bring collections of these photos to the public. That has become the "Art Models" project and includes hardcover book, disk, and e-book publishing as well as several websites that give artists access to figure photos

Kathi Lipp is a busy conference and retreat speaker, currently speaking each year to thousands of women throughout the United States. Common Sense Organizing Tips...

Kathi Lipp's style of organizing makes sense. I love to look at glossy pictures of beautiful rooms, but my rooms look anything but most of the time. Lipp uses common sense tips to help the wannabes reach just a bit more and find the solution that conquers their clutter, so her advice was something I could wrap my mind around. Where one family may use the dining room table as a catch all, another might have front door issues. She goes into the flow of the room, how to identify and conquer trouble spots and gives hints and tips from others who may share your unique struggles. Lipp also comes across as a chatty girlfriend who's been there rather than a lofty expert. This is a plus when I want to tackle a problem. Nothing like a lofty expert to make me hide my head in shame. I'll never, never, never be a Martha Stewart clone, but I could learn a few good hints from Kathi Lipp.

Lipp covers all areas of the house (and a few life issues, too) and tackles them one at a time. Bathroom got you buried, turn to the section on bathrooms. Office your nightmare? Good news, she covers that one, too. She even has a chapter on food preparation and organization which just might reimburse you for the price of the book, over and over again if you are prone to hitting drive-thrus due to "what's for dinner?" paralysis. If you are looking to get organized and tame your clutter beast this is a great resource.

Yea, Kathi Lipp! What a great help this book is. It's simple with easy to follow steps. Many organizing books are filled with good ideas but have so many steps and become so complicated that I never even try their systems. Not so with this book. I can't wait to get started!

Not much of contents.

I bought the printed book (and eBook) based on the sample chapter and customer review.
I am regretting my purchase. It only has 70 pages of talend big data stuffs. The rest of pages (20 - 30 pages) talks about Cloudera virtual machines thing. I was hoping the book explains the each big data components, but it only shows you how to connect to hadoop and some examples. The book doesn't cover any deeper. This is very beginner book.
To me, this book is very big disappointment, and regret to spend $37 for getting print book. Lessons learned, never buy the print book, but buy eBook first to see if they are any good. :)

I’ve just finished reading Talend for Big Data, courtesy of Packt Publishing.
I’ve been using Talend for ETL and automation tasks for some years and I wanted to start using it to feed data into a small hadoop cluster we have, so I think I can be able to put myself on this book readers shoes easily.

I’ve enjoyed the book follows a real use case of sentiment analisys using twitter data: I was getting tired of examples word counting / term extraction examples found in other Hadoop texts.

The structure is very straightforward and It resembles closely a real world Big Data integration job:

-The basics: what’s Talend, what’s hadoop, and how to get started (terminology and setup)
-How to get data into a hadoop cluster (there’s a component for that: tHDFDOutput)
-Working with tables (hive) in Talend using Hive.
-Working with data using Pig.
-Loading results back to an SQLdatabase using Apache Sqoop
-And finally, how to industrialize this process.

In the real world you’ll surely choose between Hive and Pig to make your project simpler. Having a chapter for hive and another for pig lets you see and compare both technologies and helps you choose the one you feel more comfortable working with.

I’ve also found very interesting using Apache Sqoop to getting the data out of Hadoop back to the SQL World.

I didn’t know about Sqoop before reading the book and I was tempted to extract the data from Hadoop using a Talend job as a bridge. Dont’ do IT!. Using Sqoop is much better because it can paralelize the load job. It remembers me how to make backups using a disk cabin vs using a server agent (just tell the cabin to do the backup by its own vs copying all the data to a point and move it around).

Surprises:

:: The good ::

* Contexts! I’ve ever thought the best part of Talend are contexts and I find great to see all the examples in the book using contexts since the beginning.
* In chapter 4 we learn how to use UDF (user-defined-functions) with Hive inside Talend. In the book the problem it solves is Hive does not support regular expressions; but It gives us a clue that may allow us to do something with interesting with other kinds of data, like images or audio files.
* The way Talend works with Pig is easier that I expected. Why? because you dont’ need to know anything about Pig latin code to get results. I expected something more complicated. In fact, I thing I’m going to use tPig* components more frequently than the Hive ones.
: The chapter about using Sqoop with Talend. For me, this chapter just justifies buying the book because it saves you a lot of time.

:: The bad ::

* I discovered in the book that Talend doesnt include all the JARs needed to work with Hadoop. This is not a technical problem per se; but a legal one: Talend cannot distribute the hadoop files under their own license. Fortunately the guys from Talend have made available a one-click-fix.
* At first glance I found the book short. Maybe I’m used to technical books with a lot of literature and this book has a very practical how-to-make-things-happen approach. I hope to see a second edition soon with dedicated to Google Big Query (which, by the way, is supported by Talend in the latest release with its own set of components).

Conclusion: concise, hands-on book about data integration with Talend and Hadoop. Highly recommendable even if you just want to extract data from an existing hadoop cluster.

Nicely covers what I feared to be complexities of dealing with Hadoop as Hive and Pig using Talend - turned to be not true

Talend for Big Data means exactly it! One of the shortest technical books I read, but sure to the point.

This book does not spend your time unwisely, if you happened to suddenly find yourself on a project involving Hadoop (or its ecosystem components) and you know at least some Talend (if not, I recommend a supplementary book that I also reviewed, Talend Open Studio Cookbook by Packt, too) then this is your book. Print it (if you got an eBook) and place a copy by your desk.

The book nicely covers what I feared complexities of dealing with Hadoop as Hive and Pig (a MR generator, not an animal), which actually turned out to be not true, thanks Talend and its 500+ components that cover 90% of what you need out of Big Data is already there for you to use. To my disbelief Talend actually is a very mature and (in paid variant) fully enterprise ready ETL solution.

The book has 7 chapters, each dedicated to a specific goal that accomplishes an exercise with a particular technology piece.
My favorite is #7: Big Data Architecture and Integration Patterns chapter. The last one, but this is the chapter where you get kind of awarded and start benefiting from the material you ingested.
Chapter 6: Aggregate Data with Pig is alot of fun and showed me a new way of interacting with Pig. It turned to be also a much easier way.
As a side note, I am in love with ETL, in general, I think it has the highest ROI out of all the enterprise tools, yet very much fun to work with and what is best - visually documenting!
Chapter 2: Building your First Big Data Job is like your first swim in deep waters - intimidating, but rewarding, full of uncertainty, but excitement and unforgettable.
All the less relevant topics as setting your training system up are shifted to the appendixes, but I recommend actually starting there if you are new to Cloudera's Hadoop (CDH) VM distribution and/or VMPlayer (served in role of your Virtual Machine).
It seemed to me that a reader does not need ANY prior knowledge of neither Talend nor Hadoop to accomplish the tasks in the book.

One suggestion I have to the author is instead of basing the examples on MySQL which seems to be out of favor by the user community MariaDB is the equivalent substitute that with the release of version 10 going to capture a lot of attention.
Another point is the Hadoop distribution preference, it seems that Hortonworks offers more bells and whistles, but it is a catchup game anyways.

well worth it!

Bought these for my granddaughter as she entered kindergarten and was interested in learning to read. Now after her first year she is able to read several of the books on her own. She needed the classroom instruction regarding word attack, looking for picture clues etc. She definitely enjoys them and never tires of reading and rereading. She's now trying to teach her younger sister!

I was disappointed in the overall look at packaging. The books are very small and numerous and thus one taken out of the wrapping thye can be easily misplaced. The paper quality is not very good or suitable for a small child who is not always very gentle. However, the contents are very good.

Great set of learn to read books to grow with.

These books are great for my little daughter to improve her reading. The books are small and thin, which works well for her, so she doesn’t feel overwhelmed. Each book is pretty short with only 8 pages so it doesn’t feel like work and helps boost her confidence. She finds the titles and endings to be funny.

I like that the set has 4 different reading levels so that she can grow into them as her reading progresses. We are only on the first set which is perfect for a little one who is beginning to read. Each of the 20 books in this set includes some phonics and some sight words. She can’t decode all the words, but can use picture clues to figure them out.

The set was good value for the price and is perfect for a child learning to read.

Could only run second to a book by Miyagi himself!

This book could only run a second to a book by Miyagi himself! Yamaguchi Gogen Sensei gives us the absolute guide on the karate system founded by Chojun Miyagi. Even the class structure is there. From Junbi Undo (preparatory exercises) to basics, kata, kumite, Hojo Undo (supplementary exercises)this book is traditional Goju Ryu Karate all the way.
Put together in a very logical step by step way many of today's martial arts writers should take from Yamaguchi on how to write a karate instruction manual.
As is always the case, no matter how well the words describe the techniques or how well the pictures show them, there is no substitute for an actual teacher. Why? Because you cannot explain proper breathing, timing, tempo, focus, weight distribution, balance, and the many other aspects of techniques and kata without actually seeing them and doing them in person. A qualified karate instructor is always needed. This book is great for any one beginning their journey in Goju Ryu karate. It is perfect for the seasoned practitioner also. It is packaged perfect for the collector item that it is. I always use it for reference and have this deep respect for the writer for he is one of the original masters of Goju Ryu Karate and the founder of Goju Kai (Japanese Goju).
I highly recommend this book and anything that you can get your hands on by Morio Higaonna. A word to the wise. The paperback edition listed for this book refers to the title To Te Jutsu. Be careful. It is not Gogen Yamaguchi' book but rather Gichen Funakoshi's early vershion of Shotokan. Buyer beware of this. Buy this hard cover. You will not be disappointed.

GojuRyu Karate Do Kyohan - You need your reading glasses for this one!

This text is full of information. It relies heavily on graphics to convey the various movements that form the essential Kata and fighting application of the Goju Ryu style.

This is a work that will benefit those of you who have been training for a few years as it requires a knowledge of several higher Kata and a more than basic understanding of goju ryu techniques. It is always good to read the wisdom of a master of our style and Yamaguchi does have some important messages for the thoughtful student of Karate. However, you will have to work your way through short paragraph after paragraph of ideas to find a thought that will grab your attention!

Unfortuneately the print and graphic images in this edition are too small for old eyes and if you are over 50 you really need some magnification to be able to read the text and interpret the graphics.

This is a great book, BUT, I think it takes some previous training and not a white belt level to comprehend the hidden golden nuggets that Yamaguchi Sensei hid in here...
It's all there as if he wrote a letter to you and had it handed down the line to you.
For a Goju person , this is a MUST buy ! I study Okinawan Goju, but to get lessons from a MASTER like Yamaguchi Sensei,...so worth it !
Do yourself the favor and just pull the trigger and buy it !
Thank you Yamaguchi Sensei for leaving such a treasure behind for us ! And thank you to the publisher for making it available so economically !
