Good start to the series..

I’ve love and can’t get enough of this author’s darker series and Stars Landing was the only series I hadn’t read of hers. It’s more on the lighter side and mostly is centered around the small town in PA and its close nit residence. Some of the books are more serious and others plenty of humor with each having some suspense in them. The characters all cross over into each of the books so we get to continue to see how a previous couple is doing even after their book.

The first book is defiantly the most serious one of the series and the only one that takes place mainly out of Stars Landing. Hannah Clary left her small town with big dreams. Three years later she is on unemployment and struggling to make her bills. When she finally gets an interview with big corporation she thinks fate has finally decided to smile on her. She is second guessing that soon when her job entails being the personal assistant of the CEO who has a reputation of being cold and relentless. She works her butt off for Elliott Michaels with little to no appreciation from him. She is also confused at her unwilling attraction for him and his suggestion of wanting to have an affair. As she is dealing with this she also starts getting threatening letters that over time escalate to threats of violence. ..

We are introduced to many of the future characters in this book along with a character (the PI) from her Dark series. This was a great start to the series and I had no problem wanting to immediately go on to the next book.

Fantastic depth and true characters.

This was an addictive read! I didn't expect to get sucked in, but lo and behold, two days later and I sit here and wonder where the time went! Ms. Gadziala certainly can build some tension. And the intimate scenes? Well lets just say I had a little talk with my husband... I will be expecting a few replays from this book :)
It is always a pleasant feeling to stumble upon a new writer who really has a story to tell. From the first scene in Hannah's kitchen to the constant back and forth between her and EM I enjoyed every page. I loved the determination and fiestiness of Hannah character. She had backbone and class despite coming from a small town. I liked the brooding power alpha male of Elliott and the fun sexy James. Even Tad was a joy to read.
I was so frustrated during the harassment and wanted to reach into my tablet and grab the rumor hounds, give a bit of a shake and a stern look, but I just kept turning pages, my heart going out to Hannah and the struggle she had to endure.
I think this was one of my favorite books for the chemistry. I couldn't get enough of seeing the two discover each other!
All together a great romance, an intriguing mystery and a really wonderful job by Jessica Gadziala.
I am now a fan!

Jessica Gadziala has a way with words.

Jessica Gadziala has a way with words. Her description of the characters in this book is so well done. I love getting introspective into both lead characters and she delivers. The mystery surrounding the gossip and the threats directed at Hannah is well done. Elliot's journey into his feelings for Hannah is epic. The humor that pops up over and over is so much fun. Real life is like that.. Humor eases the tension in our lives. There are many "boss/employee" romances available. This one stands out because the author has made these characters feel like people we care about. I know I am chaffing to get into the next book as soon as I am finished with my review here.

Give these related but standalone books a chance, I think you will be delighted.

Useful? Yes! Good? Heck, no.

Is there anything worse than a review or a blurb that describes a product as *blank* meets *blank*? How simplistic! How callous! That said, the first words that popped into my head after reading the first book in the ever-popular series "The Secrets of Droon" was Harry Potter meets The Magic Tree House. Which probably was exactly what author Tony Abbott was going for. This early chapter book (originally published in 1999) looks like a slightly older and more mature version of those saccharine-soaked "Magic Tree House" tales, but without the oh-so-slightly useful factual information. Instead, the wizardly wonders of "Harry Potter" and other fantasy worlds have been co-opted and boiled down into a scant 80 pages. If Abbott is to be commended for anything, it's for his sheer cheek. With nary an apology he whips up a bunch of fast-paced high-flying adventures artfully stolen from any number of better written books and smooshes them into titles that kids everywhere adore.

Eric, Julie, and Neal are best friends. They play soccer together. They go to school together. And when Eric's stuck cleaning the basement on a day that would perfect for a little soccer action, his buds stick by his side and help. Good thing that they do too. A mislaid kick of the ball reveals a tiny crawlspace under the basement stairs. Further inspection, however, leads the three kids to an amazing discovery. There, leading away from the basement by a flight of rainbow-colored stairs, is a world they never knew existed. Before they completely realize what is happening, the friends are wrapped up in a race to save the magical world of Droon from the desires of the evil and somewhat fishy Lord Sparr. Aiding them is the beautiful Princess Keeah, the wizard Galen, and a furry red-headed spider troll named Max. It's up to them to keep the secret of this magical world and fight the good fight when called upon.

First of all, good luck on finding any characters that aren't white and, preferably, blond. Second, I loved how Abbott covered all his bases. For the girls who aren't as into fantasy adventure but like princess tales, Keeah covers that particular need. Eric sports Harry-Potterish glasses (though, to be fair, so does Jack from the "Magic Tree House" books, so who can truly say what illustrator Tim Jessell was actually ripping off?). You have your standard Gandalf/Dumbledore white-bearded wizard. The villain has no real desires beyond power (the all-purpose bad guy need). Altogether, this is about as generic as they come. The book is better written than your average "Magic Tree House" story, of course. But that's really not saying much.

Still, the kids cry for Droon without cease or pause. They love it. They adore it. They'd own every single copy of these books if they could. I have to fight off swarming hoards of six-year-olds every time I get a new edition of the series on my shelf. Whence the popularity? Well, it's hard to deny that Abbott has zeroed in on a really ignored section of the populace. Kids who can read chapter books but still need pictures and a fast story to help them along are everywhere. And while I can't help but pray that maybe someday some author will write something just as addictive but a little less ... familiar (let's say) than this, that day has not yet arrived. So when a child asks me to recommend something since they've read all the "Magic Tree House" books already, I admit to sometimes leading them over to the "Droon" section of the library.

Hopefully this series will lure kids towards better books in the library though. In any case, while it won't win any awards for writing anytime soon, "Droon" is a staple in any library that must entice reluctant readers to its tables. Overdone, but useful.

Try my son's favorite author!

I can't recommend this series enough. As my son's attention span increased (as he was nearing his fourth birthday), I turned to chapter books to offer him some variety (and reduce my boredom). Having experimented with dozens of alternatives, Tony Abbott's Droon series is my son's (and, let's be honest here, my) unequivocal favorite. I'm still astounded by my son's fascination with the magical world of Droon, a parallel universe where good versus evil wage an intricate, ever-evolving struggle against a rich, fantasy-laden backdrop. I genuinely enjoy reading these books aloud. We've read all of books in this series, and we've read most repeatedly as we await the next installment. Each story builds upon its predecessor, so The Hidden Stairs and the Magic Carpet is definitely the place to start. The books offer characters for every child to identify with; boys may prefer the bespeckled Eric or the more rambunctious Neal, girls may favor the quick-thinking Julie or Princess Keeah, the junior wizard -- all four (plus the adorable spider-troll Max) contribute mightily to the team's effort. Tony Abbott packs these books with vivid descriptions and non-stop action without frightening young readers (or listeners). Open the basement door and visit Droon - you won't be sorry.

I bought a class set of this book for my third grade class. They absolutely loved it and begged to be able to read it every day! They couldn't wait for the next books in the series to come out. It was easy to read and follow the adventure.

Great title for a great book.

I am into this book and the 5 other companion volumes on this amazing history of the early church...these small clusters of believers firmly trusting in God the Father and his son Jesus Christ and how the world was turned around forever as they were directed and/or moved to go about saying and doing what their Rabbi and master that had been killed had told them to do.
The full and somewhat smaller set of 6 volumes...Lloyd-Jones never able to finish them...illness and retirement came to him for 13 years before he left us here without him. For him to turn these messages from his pulpit into the written word it is...and how it turned out is remarkably done, as is all he has now for us in printed works.
How these mostly uneducated men (in Acts of the Apostles) were able to go about preaching the resurrected Christ and do all he did in good works, looking esp on the ill, the poor and often more the common persons & it was they who would listen to them....it was amazing indeed. This message of truth, love and hope swept the then known world and though a minority (I believe forever)it will always remain. This is the book to read about what happened after the people snuffed out (they thought forever) this Christ who claimed to be God in the flesh and taught them a new way to believe and to live.
If we all listened and obeyed all that these early Christians wrote and left us in the New Testament, the world we have would be turned around to a bit of heaven on earth...but you will find it is not in the natural mans heart to be that way, or at least not until that mind and heart have been taken off the top of their throne first.
Read anything by Martyn Lloyd-Jones...begining with the small book on "Studies in the Sermon on the Mount"...and you will be thrilled. This review goes for all in this series of 6 books (all he could finish) before he died in 1981. He is missed very much, the man and his ministry. A gentle and kind soul he was always, all 81 years.

As with his other books on this series on the early chapters of Acts, Dr Lloyd Jones illustrates the essence of faith in Christ in succinct and logical preaching. His teaching is based on the historical evidence written in the Bible.. One gets inevitable conclusion for realization of God's presence and intervention despite Satan's pervasive stronghold on humans who cannot solve any of their problems. It transfers our earth bound, worldly thinking to God centered living. It makes one to review life and make the only decision to believe in Jesus Christ and follow his way. For the first time I have learned what Christianity is.
