About the Author
Kathi Kones has been working with SAP software since 1995. After completing her computer science degree at Minnesota State University, Mankato, she was hired by General Mills, Inc., a global corporation that developed in-house talent and encouraged job changes within the company. She gained SAP R/2 and R/3 experience in the roles of functional analyst, ABAP developer, project manager, Finance master data migration specialist, and integration manager. She participated in four SAP implementations and worked in eight countries. Kathi has most recently worked on SAP master data management projects as a consultant for ThreeBridge Solutions, LLC, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Best book on ALV Development

The SAP List Viewer book is a must to have for any ABAP developer interested in learning practical ways of building ALV programs for SAP applications. The book begins with an introduction to the fundamental concepts as well as the evolution of the ALV. It progressively transitions to the depth of ALV development using both the Function Module and Control Framework approach.

The author has brilliantly compared the techniques using both the Function Module and Control Framework approaches. The summary with key points and best practices (where applicable) at the end of each chapter, makes it a helpful reference guide. Practical tips through out the book from the author’s experience makes this a very handy book both for a beginner and a proficient ABAP developer.

I give this book a 5 star rating for its simplicity, yet detailed and practical treatment of ALV development. I highly recommend this book for any ABAP developer.

Good book for SAP ALV reporting

This book has a very succinct yet comprehensive introduction to writing ALV reports. A new developer will inevitably run into the old and new ways of creating ALV reports, particularly when working in large companies with a long history of SAP usage. It is hard to find standard documentation that covers all techniques adequately. The author does a good job of describing the differences. The tutorials based approach to the topic works quite well as the content builds in terms of complexity and features that could be added to ALV reports.

The content is well organized, the book is easy to read and the coding content is error free. The handy list of resources and tips and tricks are an added bonus. If you are looking to get started or want a ready reference by your side while working on ALV reports, this book is all you need.

This book is well organized and well written, that details the fundamentals of both the old, (Function Modules), and new, (Control), ALV frameworks. I really like the fact the author included a thorough explanation of the old function module framework as a developer WILL, (not if), be required to modify/enhance legacy applications using this framework at some point in their career.

This is an easy read, that provides clear step by step exercises, where each chapter builds nicely from the previous, and key points are reiterated throughout. Very nicely done...

Steven G. Brandl (Ph.D., Michigan State University) is an associate professor in the department of criminal justice at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Professor Brandl teaches graduate and undergraduate courses including criminal investigation, criminal psychology, police administration, and issues in police practice and policy, among others. His research interests include criminal investigation, police decision-making and behavior, police use of force, and the hazards of police work. Professor Brandl has conducted research in many major metropolitan police departments. He is the author of numerous articles in professional journals and a frequent presenter at regional and national professional conferences.

Definitely a good book to read.

Had to pick this book up for required readings in a college course. It has definitely expanded on my criminal justice knowledge! Steven Brandl provides his readers with current examples while linking them to the vast area of crime investigations. The imagery is spectacular! I highly recommend this book if you're studying criminal justice or have taken a passive interest in the field. You won't be disappointed!

I was fortunate enough to take a class at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee taught by the author of this book. I found the book (and the class) very informative. The book is written in a logical format with case studies that make for interesting reading. I recommend this text for anyone interested in learning more about criminal investigations or instructors looking for a comprehensive text for their students. This text is worth the price.

At what price?

I know the author, and the contents of this book are first rate - The Best! What I don't understand ... Why won't anyone reveal which edition this is? The latest version is the 6th. I have seen the 4th and 5th editions for sale elsewhere on this website, so I *assume* this book is the 6th. And why are prices being shown at $70+ for new and $65+ for used? Foundation Center sells this book for $39.95 list price. So, once more, why would you pay $65 or $70 for a $40 book? I am confused, because usually Amazon is the home of bargains and awesome low prices. Is there something special about this particular book? Shouldn't someone explain that to potential buyers like me? If the difference between books is hard/soft cover, I encourage you to buy soft cover and apply the cost difference in constructive ways.

About the Author
Sheryl Whitlock obtained her BSMT from University of Delaware, followed by Clinical Rotation at University of Iowa, and then an MA from Beaver College in Glenside, PA. Additional education includes a master of arts in education from Arcadia University. Whitlock's career began with the Medical Technology Program Faculty at Rolling Hill Hospital in Elkins Park, PA. She then transferred to Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell, PA, where she worked as a Faculty Member of the Medical Laboratory Technician Program. Sheryl returned to the University of Delaware in 1998, this time assuming the position of Laboratory Coordinator of Student Health Services. Sheryl has more than 30 years of work experience in all areas of laboratory medicine and as an educator for both clinical laboratory science and clinical laboratory technology programs.

A sloppily edited text which makes a challenging subject harder than it really needs to be.

This a dreadful book - it's rife with editing errors. It looks like it was cut-and-pasted from a MT level text without any review. Many of the end of chapter review questions have duplicate answers or reference material not covered in the chapter. The graphics are poorly edited as well, with just a straight list of bullet points when some of those points should have been headers. On page 82, half of an equation is missing - our teacher wondered why we weren't getting how to calculate the number of units you would have to test in order to find one that was negative for two or more antigens! This a difficult text for students who take attention to detail very seriously. Choose a Pearson textbook instead.

the technology it shows are new and pretty practical. So it is a friendly book, which uses understandable words rather than fancy professional phrases. If there is something to improve is that sometimes there are spelling errors, which may lead to misunderstanding.

Informative and Interesting

The Cambridge Music Handbooks try to do what is rarely done-- bridge the gap between the dilettante "light" style of books on music that are written for the "general public" the esoteric style of heavy musicological writing. A noble pursuit, but one that runs the risk of pleasing no one rather than achieving a happy medium. Having read several of the Cambridge Music Handbooks, this one stands out as being one of the more successful. I especially enjoyed the discussion of the history of the forms which the Rhapsody in Blue has appeared ("jazzy" versions versus "classical" renditions), as well as the background of the work's first performance in Aeolian Hall in 1924. At times, the book tends towards the more "musicological" style, but all in all, it remains accessible and interesting to anyone interested in music. Schiff's style throughout is engaging and witty. If this is a piece of music you are looking to explore further, I highly recommend this book.

Stunning

This will probably remain the standard analysis of Rhapsody in Blue for a long time to come. Its terminology has already become standard in other studies. David Schiff, a wonderful composer himself, takes us to a microscopic look under the hood of this monument of American music. It requires the ability to read music, but if you do, the old war-horse, the Rhapsody, will amaze you with all the life in it.

I was having trouble finding a good bio on George Gershwin and now I have it

Rhapsody in Blue being one of my all time favorites and now this book on George Gershwin is one of my all time favorites that I tell everyone about. I was having trouble finding a good bio on George Gershwin and now I have it! From learning how he blamed his headaches on his doomed love for Paula Pound, Charlie Chaplins wife and went to psychologists as a result. This ultimately became the aggressive brain which killed him at 38 far too young. So glad to have found this bio by David Schiff when local bookstores shamelessly cannot seem to put anything out for a composer earlier than the 70s.

There's more hojojutsu in tying your sneakers than there is in this book.

Let's be honest and very clear: This Book Does Not Contain Any Hojojutsu. If that's what you're looking for to round out your Koryu or Shinobi training, go elsewhere. Hojojutsu is a very structured art, one of the 18 Bugei Ju-Happan methods that traditional Japanese warriors had to learn during Tokugawa times. A proper presentation of the art would have to include its History, Rope Lengths, Types, and Terminology, Knots, Loops, and Hitches, Tying Sequence, and the differences in tying men or women. I was taught Ittatsu-ryu hojojutsu by Tetsuya Higuchi and Shidare Yanagi-ryu hojojutsu by Don Angier. What Allen has written here is one of the commonly-found backyard "martial arts," one developed, no doubt, by experimenting with his students. If he wants to put that in book form, that's fine, but call it Obi-waza or something equally silly and appropriate -- and sell it for what it's worth, not $23. That kind of behavior is not countenanced in the practice of Budo!

Misleading title, bad photography, and dubious "techniques".

First and foremost, I am giving this book a single star because it simply doesn't depict hojojutsu / torinawajutsu. I have a copy of Fujito Seiko's "Zukai Torinawajutsu" (the definitive text on the subject), and have studied several other well regarded books on hojojutsu, all of which share two inconvenient traits: they are prohibitively expensive (Fujito-san's book is around $300 USD), and they are all written in Japanese. I purchased this because it appeared to be a new, English language book on what is a very rare and difficult to research martial art, only to find that the author had failed to include even a *single* restraint tie, and had opted to illustrate eleven capture techniques that are either unfaithful interpretations or completely non-traditional.

Again, I know the source material fairly well; I only purchased the book to have something other than instruction DVDs from Don Angiers in English. I won't even be placing this on the shelf next to my actual hojojutsu books, because it simply doesn't belong.

All of the techniques are illustrated using a black gi belt in a grainy, black and white photo, and the author is wearing black pants, which makes the belt difficult to see. The history and background information provided is something you could glean from Wikipedia, and the techniques themselves are simple trapping mechanics using a belt, none of which culminate in an actual *tie*, which is the entire point of the art.
